Are you looking for a role with increased responsibility? There is a vacancy for Lead Radiotherapy Engineer based in the Radiotherapy Physics Department at the Royal Preston Hospital. You will lead a team of 8 engineers and 2 engineering apprentices and be part of a group which also includes 18 clinical scientists, 12 dosimetrists and a quality manager. Ideally you will be on the register of Clinical Technologists (RCT).
Main duties of the job:
- We are seeking an experienced, highly skilled and motivated Radiotherapy Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team.
- The post holder will provide leadership and day-to-day operational management of all aspects of radiotherapy engineering.
- This will include leading the team of Engineers, maintaining oversight of recruitment, staff management and service delivery.
- The post holder will take overall responsibility for development of the Engineering workforce in line with service requirements and for overseeing their education.
- The post holder is expected to manage Engineering input in research and development.
Working for our organisation:
Rosemere Cancer Centre is on the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Royal Preston Hospital site and provides an external beam radiotherapy service for the adult population of Lancashire and South Cumbria (1.6 million population). The Centre has eight clinical Elekta linacs (including two Harmony Pro linacs), all with Vision RT surface guided technology, CBCT, flattening filter free treatment capability and equipped with Response ABC system. Two dedicated Philips Big Bore CT scanners with Vision RT surface guided technology. MOSAIQ® and SYNERGISTIQ™. Exciting developments include:
- Commissioning of our first Elekta EVO linac currently being installed.
- Commissioning and implementation of Monaco treatment planning system to replace Pinnacle.
- Evaluation of Sun Nuclear PerFRACTION for pre-treatment and in vivo QA.
- Implementation of Elekta ONE® Smart View.
- Potential replacement of two CT scanners in the next financial year.

Person specification:
Qualifications & Education:
- Essential criteria: Degree, HND, HNC or other high-level qualification in a relevant engineering or science-based discipline; Recognised relevant equivalent engineering apprenticeship or vocational qualification; Equivalent experience.
- Desirable criteria: Membership of IPEM or other equivalent professional body; Registered as a Clinical Technologist (RCT); Recognised leadership / management qualification; Relevant manufacturers training courses.
Knowledge & Experience:
- Essential criteria: Extensive knowledge and experience of maintenance and repair of complex radiotherapy equipment; Possess a wide range of engineering knowledge, to include electronic, electrical, mechanical, gas and water under pressure and vacuum systems; Extensive experience in electro-mechanical engineering workshop practices and techniques; Extensive knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional guidelines, including but not limited to IR(ME)R, IRR, H&SWA, COSHH, F-Gas and Medical Device Regulations; Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure; Knowledge of working within a quality management system; Line management experience including staff appraisal.
- Desirable criteria: Training and experience as a quality auditor; Involved with the operation of Quality management systems; Experience of supervision of students and trainees.
Skills & Abilities:
- Essential criteria: Able to logically diagnose complex component and system faults on patient critical medical equipment; Ability to communicate complex information across all professional boundaries; Ability to relate confidently with and motivate staff of all grades and disciplines.
- Desirable criteria: Evidence of publications / presentations; Evidence of collaboration with other organisations; Evidence of involvement in service development or research work; Experience of teaching, mentoring or coaching.
