University Hospitals Dorset are looking to recruit a General Maintenance Assistant to work as part of their Estates team at Poole Hospital. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate a keen understanding of all modern general maintenance activities, both reactive and planned; they will require a willingness to learn, be a dedicated team player and have a proven track record.

The successful candidate will need to be able to work unsupervised and maintain a flexible approach to working hours. Knowledge of at least one of the following subjects would be of major advantage, although training will be given:

  • Basic mechanical & electrical systems
  • Water testing routines

Base Location: Poole Hospital / Alderney SSD

UHD are investing, developing and transforming Trust services in line with the New Hospital Programme. Some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or permanently. Recruiting Managers will be happy to answer any service-specific questions at interview.

If a role or service relocates as part of a planned move, excess mileage will not be reimbursed. Travel from home to the new work base will be classed as a normal commute. Any other changes will be managed under Trust or national terms and conditions.

Person specification:

Qualifications

Essential criteria:

  • Must hold a driving licence (manual)
  • GCSE grade C or above or equivalent in English and maths

Desirable criteria:

  • Computer literacy
  • NVQ in an engineering or construction based subject

Experience

Essential criteria:

  • Able to communicate clearly and accurately both verbally and in writing
  • Be computer literate and able to record data
  • Able to work unsupervised in a variety of situations requiring interaction with staff from other departments and patients/patients’ families

Desirable criteria:

  • Previous building services experience in a complex building environment or similar
  • Background in Engineering

Knowledge

Essential Criteria:

  • Health & Safety Training
  • Awareness of the control of legionella in healthcare premises

Desirable criteria:

  • Training or experience in Construction, Mechanical or Electrical services
