This is an exciting time to join Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Following significant organisational change, we are strengthening our Financial Management structure to support the Trust as it progresses through the second year of its multiyear financial recovery plan. The post holders will work collaboratively across the Financial Management team, contributing to the delivery of high‑quality business and financial support for budget holders and managers. The role will assist Management Accountants with trend analysis, preparation of financial management accounts, and the implementation of robust controls and efficiencies across Care Groups and Corporate functions. This position is integral to maintaining accurate financial information and supporting informed decision‑making across the organisation. This role offers an excellent opportunity for candidates seeking first‑hand exposure to NHS financial management. Main duties of the job:

  • Reporting to the Management Accountant for coordination of workload and Care Group or Corporate Group for delivery.
  • Providing financial support to the entire financial management department on a prioritised basis, including all Care Groups and the Corporate Group.
  • Maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the financial ledgers to ensure the robustness of the financial information provided.
  • Adopting a proactive and assertive approach when working with customers and finance colleagues.
  • Interacting in a positive and supportive relationship with budget holders, managers, customers and colleagues.
  • Demonstrating corporate awareness and the need for confidentiality and discretion.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the divisional financial managers in preparing accurate and timely monthly and annual management and financial accounts.
  • Accurately preparing and inputting financial information such as budget and expenditure journals into the General Ledger.
  • Investigating and interpreting information from the various feeder systems.
  • Undertaking the analysis of income and expenditure budget reports, investigating queries and analysing detailed data to identify errors/discrepancies/variances, taking corrective action as required.
  • Maintaining and reconciling a range of control suspense accounts.
  • Calculating and raising sundry debtor requests, and investigating and resolving outstanding customer queries.
  • Providing costing information for the finance officers, deputy directorate finance managers or divisional finance managers and budget holders, as required.
  • Providing financial information to non-finance and finance colleagues as required.
  • Liaising directly and resolving enquiries from budget holders and non-finance colleagues.
  • Assisting in the annual budget setting process.
  • Assisting the monthly reconciliation of budgets and the maintenance of the current and recurrent budget position.

Person specification:

Qualifications:

  • Essential criteria: Minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English, at Grade C or above. Currently studying for minimum of NVQ level 3 or equivalent qualification (e.g AAT intermediate/A Level). Prepared to undertake further training and development and be committed to achieving a PDP. Ambition/Desire for career progression.
  • Desirable criteria: Studying or aspiring to study for a CCAB qualification.

Experience:

  • Essential criteria: Experience of working in a financial environment. Be able to understand and use computerised financial systems. Excel Intermediate level. Basic accounting knowledge.
  • Desirable criteria: Experience of working in NHS financial environment.

Skills:

  • Essential criteria: Quality focused, adaptable/flexible, good numerical analysis skills, good communication skills, fast learner, good attention to detail.
