We are looking for a highly motivated Clinical Support Worker to join our children's team based at Norwich Community Hospital. This role involves taking measurements of children when they arrive for their appointments at the Children’s Centre, covering the Children’s Centre reception, and assisting with stock management for our children's community nursing team.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Facilitate the efficient running of the Children’s Centre by supporting the day‑to‑day running of clinics, performing clinical duties during a pre‑clinic, maintaining the equipment, managing stock levels, and performing infection control procedures.
  • Support the children’s clinical teams with the ordering of products, stock management, cleaning medical equipment and cupboard rotation to contribute to an effective and efficient children’s nursing service.
  • Under the direction of the Community Paediatrician or Registered Nurse, work with all members of the multidisciplinary team, to contribute to the provision of the highest standards of patient care.
  • Provide cover to the children’s reception area, greeting children and their families, directing them to use the check‑in screen and being available to answer any queries.
  • Act as a role‑model to others in all aspects of work and consistently demonstrate NCH&C’s Values and Behaviour Framework.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • Accurately and promptly carry out the instructions of the Community Paediatrician or Registered Nurse (RN) who is professionally accountable for the delivery of care.
  • Book appointments for and perform the pre‑clinic appointments which includes anthropometric measurements, general concerns, and holistic assessments.
  • Greet, interact with, and emotionally support the patients and attendees of the Children’s Centre.
  • Provide reception cover at the Children’s Centre, responding to patient and attendee queries, and answering the telephone.
  • Report to registered staff any patient that gives cause for concern or any observed changes in a patient’s clinical condition.
  • Support patient’s emotional well‑being by supporting positive conversations.
  • Accurately document all care delivered to patients, including recording documentation electronically on trust systems maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Respond appropriately to clinical emergencies to ensure the patient receives appropriate care.
  • Be aware of role in emergency situations and what actions should be undertaken.
  • Adhere to all trust policies / procedures / nursing guidelines when undertaking any activities.
  • Participate in the admission process under the supervision of registered staff.
  • Provide and deliver a high standard of individualised personal nursing care, including measuring height, weight, and anthropometry; recording fluid balance and nutrition; measuring heart rate and blood pressure; wound observation; and urine analysis.
  • Assist and take responsibility for maintaining medical devices and clinical equipment, including decontamination, taking devices to families and keeping accurate records.
  • Be responsible for the ordering of medical / surgical supplies and ensure these are stored correctly.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and adhere to trust infection control procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation of patients and equipment for treatment, investigations or procedures as directed by a Community Paediatrician or RN.
  • Chaperone/escort patients to other clinical departments and or NHS Units under the direction of the Community Paediatrician or RN.
  • Support relatives under the guidance of a Community Paediatrician or RN.

Communication

  • Welcome patients, visitors, and relatives to clinical areas where required, providing assistance, support and information as needed.
  • Answer the telephone in a polite courteous manner and respond appropriately within remit.
  • Communicate effectively within the nursing team, multi‑disciplinary team and other departments to ensure that patient care is well planned and coordinated.
  • Contribute to the handover of the care of patients within the team under the direct supervision of a Community Paediatrician or RN, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Report and record using the trust’s systems (Datix) of all incidents, accidents, and complaints to the senior nurse on duty.
  • Use the System One and ICE and other trust systems as required by the clinical area.

Management

  • Promote a professional, welcoming and uncluttered environment, keeping all storage areas well stocked, safe, clean and tidy.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of all medical devices used within the clinical team.
  • Work collaboratively with the integrated care system when patient equipment / medical devices require purchasing, delivering and servicing.
  • Ensure all waste is disposed of in line with trust policy.
  • Participate in audit under the direction of the Community Paediatrician or RN.

Professional/Educational

  • Ensure up to date with all mandatory training sessions.
  • Have completed the Care Certificate or relevant experience in a care setting.
  • Be flexible in relation to patient requirements.
  • Continue personal development in relation to identified objectives.
  • Supervise and support new staff and work with local induction programme.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of changes in policies and procedures relevant to the post.
  • Participate in training and supervision sessions relevant to the clinical area.
  • Ensure that attendance at an annual appraisal is maintained and documented.

Person Specification

  • Education to GCSE level Grade 5 in English and Mathematics or equivalent.
  • Care Certificate and or equivalent health care experience.

Desirable criteria

  • City and Guilds NVQ Level 3 in Care/Health and Social Care.
  • City and Guilds NVQ Level 3 in Child Care / Child Development.
