Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust is delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious, dynamic individual to join our committed and well integrated multidisciplinary team, providing high standard care to the local community as a Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine.

Main duties of the job:

  • Dartford & Gravesham NHS Trust hosts one of the 2 acute stroke centres in West Kent.
  • Darent Valley Hospital has a 40 bed combined stroke unit.
  • The Hyper-acute stroke unit (HASU) is located on Spruce ward with 14 monitored beds.
  • There are 26 additional beds on both Spruce & Ebony ward which form the acute stroke unit (ASU).
  • DVH opened its combined HASU & ASU on 27 September 2024.
  • A new model of working for stroke consultants will be introduced from January 2025 – a dedicated stroke consultant to cover front door referrals along with another covering HASU.
  • Consultants will also be expected to do a ward round on the HASU on a 1:7 rotation between 0900-1600 on Saturday and Sunday.
  • The weekend ward rounds are separate from the weekend regional OOH weekend rota to make it less onerous.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities:

  • The post holder will join a team of 7 stroke consultants.
  • They will take part in front door responsibility – working 4 days, with an off day in between, taking stroke referrals from ED & AMU, supported by 2 stroke CNS and an allocated stroke SHO.
  • HASU ward rounds – working on the 14-bedded HASU for a week supported by a registrar grade doctor and several trainee grade & locally employed resident doctors.
  • The HASU consultant will review all new patients and acute stroke patients for the first 72 hours.
  • Full team handover at the start of each day (Board Round) and dedicated consultant handover to the nurse in charge & therapists at the end of each HASU ward round.
  • ASU ward rounds – ASU co-located with the HASU on a ward with 26 beds.
  • Daily ASU ward rounds (2 consultants) with a full team handover at the start of each day and dedicated consultant handover to the nurse in charge at the end of each ward round.

  • Full GMC Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Holds CCT or equivalent or will obtain within 6 months of interview date

  • MSc, MD, PhD…
