The Band 5 role is a primary function supporting the team for the optimal care of our patients. The delivery of high quality, effective and compassionate health care to the patients of the Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust is the most important objective for the organisation.

Main duties of the job:

  • Qualified operating theatre nurse/practitioner
  • Providing skilled support to the clinical team, ensuring necessary/appropriate equipment is available for treatment needs of the patients and reporting any faults or issues appropriately
  • Skills to work across various areas within theatre; recovery, scrub and anaesthetics within own competence
  • Deputise for Band 6 Theatre nurses within specialities
  • Lead a theatre team in the absence of a band 6 or above
  • Mentoring junior members of staff and students
  • Supporting colleagues within theatre and the multidisciplinary team as necessary
  • Communicating any changes within the theatre list to the theatre coordinator of main theatres following team brief
  • Ensuring the WHO Check list is carried out in full on every patient on the theatre list
  • Assisting Senior Theatre Team with reviewing of theatre procedures and practices

Training & Qualifications:

  • Essential criteria: Degree level education or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through any combination of alternative study, or employment experience; Professional UK registration e.g. NMC, HCPC
  • Desirable criteria: Post registration course in field of expertise; Operating department experience

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Essential criteria: Evidence of Continued Professional Development (CPD) clearly recorded for professional profile; Multidisciplinary team working; Knowledge and experience of a range of approaches to the management of patients utilizing clinical reasoning
  • Desirable criteria: Awareness of local and national agenda within the specialty; Experience of staff supervision

Skills & Ability:

  • Essential criteria: Ability to demonstrate the required behaviour in keeping with the Trust values; Ability to communicate written and verbal information in English, keeping legible and accurate notes; Good communication skills to communicate complex, sensitive or confidential information in an appropriate manner; Ability to cope with working in a stressful and unpredictable environment; Applies a good understanding of Equality & Diversity in all areas of work
