Title: Children and Young Person’s Support Worker – Birmingham

Employment Status: Zero‑Hour

Reports to: Children and Young People’s Co‑ordinator

Salary: £12.60 per hour

Hours: Zero‑hour/ Variable Hour Contract Including Weekends & School Holidays

Location: Birmingham

About the Role

We look for a warm, personable, highly motivated individual who can empower and support a team and children and young people with complex needs and disabilities. Passion for the role, strong communication, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills are essential. The support worker will work alongside an experienced and established team of support workers across the West Midlands region. Integrity, ethical standards, and a commitment to excellence are highly valued.

Key Responsibilities

Support workers will be responsible for:

  • Attend staff briefings and support meetings to discuss progress.
  • Be available for a minimum of 3 shifts a month to support the CYP service.
  • Support children and young people in arts, crafts, games, sports, drama, music and outings.
  • Ensure health and safety, first aid, personal care, and risk management procedures are followed.
  • Maintain accurate records: care plans, All About Me protocols, risk assessments, incident logs.
  • Deliver person‑centred activities and recreational opportunities.
  • Promote Midland Mencap to families and agencies.
  • Adhere to health and safety legislation, equal opportunities, and child protection policies.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and flexible working across the city.
  • Engage in training and development as required.
  • Support new staff during probation and undertake any additional tasks as appropriate.

Essential Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience working as part of a team supporting children with complex needs.
  • Ability to motivate and encourage participation.
  • Understanding of alternative communication methods for non‑verbal children.
  • Planning and delivering creative programmes.
  • Relevant training for the role.
  • Experience in sports and other physical activities.
  • Teamwork and ability to work independently with initiative.

Essential Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proactive, focused, and an effective team player.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and undertake an enhanced DBS.
  • Knowledge of person‑centred approaches to planning and delivering social and recreational opportunities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Practical arts, crafts, music, drama, sports or games skills.
  • Held a previous position of responsibility.

Desirable

  • Experience within an Ofsted and CQC regulated environment.
  • Full driving licence and willingness to commute across the designated area.
  • Qualifications such as Pediatric First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, Level 2 or 3 Childcare.
