Middleton Lodge Practice is looking for a trained HCA to work under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team. Previous applicants need not apply. The post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, basic observations, ECGs, long term condition reviews, injections, NHS Health Checks and wound care as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the HCA will be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis.

To be consistently rated by our patients and regulatory bodies as providing a service which is safe, effective, caring, and responsive and well led.

Main duties of the job

  • Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
  • Performing venepuncture, basic observations, ECGs, long term condition reviews, injections, NHS Health Checks and wound care in accordance with practice protocols
  • Maintaining accurate patient records on System One
  • The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
  • Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
  • Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
  • Maintaining an effective liaison with the laboratory staff at Sherwood Forest Hospitals
  • Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters
  • Working within practice policies e.g. information governance and Infection control

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the HCA may be requested to:

  • Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead
  • Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
  • Support and participate in shared learning within the practice
  • Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota

Person Specification

  • Disclosure Barring Service (DBS)
  • System One Experience
  • Communication Skills both written and oral
  • Clear and polite manner both in person and over the phone
  • Effective time management of self and clinics
  • Ability to work as a team member and autonomously
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure
  • Competent in the use of Office and Outlook systems
  • Certificates in ECGs, Long term condition reviews, Injections, NHS Health Checks and wound care.

Experience

  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of working in a health care setting
  • Experience working in primary care or GP setting

Qualifications

  • Relevant Qualifications in Venepuncture and basic Observations
  • Good Standard of General Education
  • Certificates in ECGs, Long term condition reviews, Injections, NHS Health Checks and wound care.
