We are seeking an experienced and motivated Pastoral Lead to play a key role in shaping and delivering high‑quality pastoral support across a curriculum faculty at Middlesbrough College. The successful candidate will manage and implement effective strategies that support learners’ attendance, behaviour, engagement, welfare and personal development, ensuring every student feels supported, challenged and able to succeed. Working closely with faculty leaders, tutors and cross‑college support services, you will drive improvements in student experience and outcomes while upholding the College’s values and safeguarding responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery and continuous improvement of the faculty’s pastoral support systems
  • Implement and manage Student Disciplinary and Attendance Policies consistently across the faculty
  • Act as Duty Manager and first point of contact for pastoral matters within the faculty
  • Line manage Attendance Officers and administrative staff, ensuring consistent systems and high standards
  • Develop and implement early intervention strategies with parents/carers to improve attendance and punctuality
  • Contribute to improvements in student attendance, behaviour, progression and destinations
  • Ensure students are placed in tutor groups and actively engage in Thrive lessons
  • Work closely with Associate Directors, Heads of Quality and Personal Tutors to ensure consistent support systems
  • Oversee weekly “at risk” meetings with Safeguarding and Welfare Officers
  • Ensure timely referrals to Safeguarding, Welfare and Careers teams as appropriate
  • Monitor and record interventions to address underperformance
  • Ensure progression interviews are completed and student destinations recorded
  • Support enrichment activities, student council participation and regional/national competitions
  • Participate in marketing, recruitment and learner events, including open evenings and enrolment
  • Actively promote equality, diversity, safeguarding and health and safety

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential

  • Minimum Level 3 qualification
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C / Level 4 or above (or equivalent)
  • Experience working with FE quality systems, data and processes
  • Knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures in Further Education
  • Strong organisational, communication and time management skills
  • Ability to analyse data and implement improvement strategies
  • High level of IT competency
  • Ability to lead, motivate and collaborate effectively

Desirable

  • Management qualification
  • FE management experience
  • Experience of managing staff teams
  • Experience of behaviour management and de‑escalation
  • Experience using systems such as ProMonitor, ProSolution or Report Suite
