Reports to: Executive Director or Assistant Directors

Contract Length & Wage Status: 10 months with an annual salary based on the MVSEA salary schedule

Qualifications/Previous Experience:

  • Holds a valid, active license issued through the Illinois Department of Professional and Financial Regulations, as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Experience in pediatric, special needs or school-based nursing is preferred
  • Experience working collaboratively with a wide variety of professionals and parents
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct professional nursing services, first aid, and emergency care to students age 3-22 with moderate to severe range of disabilities, including Intellectual Disabilities, Autism, Emotional Disabilities, and Multiple Disabilities that include students who are medically-fragile
  • Utilizes and seeks out health resources to provide evidence-based care that promotes independence for students
  • Collaborate with parents and school teams in the development and implementation of health care plans for students who need nursing interventions during the school day
  • Document nursing services in a timely manner, including medicaid billing
  • Identifies age/grade appropriate health education needs (hygiene, physical development, etc) and resources for student health education
  • Assists with planning and implementation of nursing services for recreational activities, extra-curricular activities, field and community trips
  • Continuously assesses, monitors, and evaluates student health needs
  • Attends intake, IEP or team meetings when appropriate and necessary
  • Manages health records and medications in accordance with state law and school protocol
  • Assists the school-based team by providing academic and functional support to students

  • Works cooperatively with administrators, consultants, community members, district liaisons and team members
  • Provides feedback and effectively communicates with students and parents
  • Follows Board of Education, district, and building guidelines and procedures
  • Maintains a high level of integrity, fairness, ethical behavior and confidentiality of information regarding students, personnel and all job related matters
  • Punctual, dependable & dedicated to providing a high-quality Nursing Program
  • Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork by completing other tasks as assigned

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including personal computers and peripherals
  • Posture: Frequent sitting and standing, bending/stooping, transitioning from floor to standing, pushing, pulling, and twisting
  • Vision: The abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Motion: Frequent movement throughout the work environment, repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding, use of a mouse, and occasional reaching
  • Lifting: Ability to lift up to 35 pounds
  • Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours
  • Mental Demands: Ability to solve complex problems in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret instructions provided in written and oral form; ability to work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress.
