Mid Sussex District Council is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Finance and Accounting Team as a Finance Apprentice. This role provides hands-on experience across a wide range of finance activities while studying towards a Level 3 Finance Apprenticeship. You'll work alongside experienced finance professionals who will support and develop your skills, giving you valuable insight into the world of local government finance and helping you build a strong foundation for your future career.
About the Role
As a Finance Apprentice, you'll play an important part in supporting the day-to-day operation of our Finance Service. This is a varied role that combines administrative, transactional and accounting responsibilities, providing exposure to many different areas of finance. You will gain experience in:
- Raising purchase orders and supporting purchase ledger activities
- Processing journals and financial transactions
- Bank reconciliations
- Supporting VAT returns
- Maintaining reserve and suspense accounts
- Assisting with recharges and property trading accounts
- Reconciling data between financial systems
- Setting up financial accounts for projects and new staff
- Supporting finance-related projects and service improvements
- Working collaboratively with colleagues across the Council
This is an excellent opportunity to develop practical finance skills while contributing to services that support our local communities.
About You
We're looking for someone who is eager to learn, organised and enthusiastic about developing a career in finance. You'll have:
- Essential
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above (or the ability to achieve these before completing the apprenticeship)
- Good ICT skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- A positive, proactive attitude and willingness to learn
- The ability to organise and prioritise your workload
- A flexible approach and ability to work as part of a team
- Commitment to delivering excellent customer service
- Desirable
- A Levels or equivalent qualifications
- Level 2 AAT qualification
- Experience using Microsoft 365 applications
- Previous work, volunteering, community or extracurricular experience
