About the Role
Mid Sussex District Council is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Planning Enforcement and Trees Team as an Assistant Tree Officer.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for arboriculture, trees and the natural environment to develop their career within local government. Working alongside the Tree Officer, you will assist with a wide range of tree-related Development Management work, helping to protect and enhance the district's valuable tree stock.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Processing applications for tree works within Conservation Areas, including site inspections and report writing.
- Providing advice on tree-related planning matters and supporting planning officers on development proposals.
- Considering requests for new Tree Preservation Orders and reviewing existing Orders.
- Responding to enquiries from residents and stakeholders on tree-related matters, including High Hedges and Hedgerow Regulations.
- Administering the High Hedge complaints process from start to finish.
- Assisting with tree-related enforcement matters where required.
- Supporting the Tree Officer and providing cover during periods of absence.
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
- An arboricultural, horticultural, countryside, ecology or related qualification at Level 2 or above.
- Experience working in an arboricultural, horticultural, countryside management, ecology or similar environment.
- A strong interest in tree management and conservation.
- The ability to inspect trees and make sound judgements regarding their condition and health.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong IT skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
- A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for business use.
Desirable qualifications and experience include:
- Experience working as a Local Authority Tree Officer or tree consultant.
- Knowledge of planning legislation and regulatory requirements relating to trees, including Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Areas.
