We are seeking an entrepreneurial FPGA Engineer to join as a core technical contributor on a cutting‑edge multi‑photon microscopy platform. This is a hands‑on engineering role spanning FPGA architecture development, system maintenance, and iterative platform improvement. You will take ownership of FPGA systems at the heart of advanced scientific imaging equipment — maintaining and enhancing existing designs, extending the current codebase, and contributing to the development of next‑generation architectures as the platform evolves. This role sits within a fast‑paced, research‑driven engineering environment and requires close collaboration with neuroscientists, physicists, and systems engineers. You will translate scientific and system requirements into robust FPGA implementations while helping shape the long‑term technical direction of the platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead development and evolution of FPGA systems within a complex scientific imaging platform
- Own and maintain an existing FPGA codebase, ensuring reliability, performance, and scalability
- Evaluate hardware architectures and make design trade‑offs across: PC interfacing, Device communication, Logic design, Memory subsystems
- Port FPGA designs across devices and platforms while preserving functionality and performance
- Debug and improve FPGA implementations across firmware, hardware interfaces, and system‑level behaviour
- Collaborate with cross‑disciplinary teams to translate scientific and technical requirements into FPGA solutions
- Work closely with end users to diagnose issues and implement effective solutions
- Contribute to documentation, design standards, and development practices
- Identify architectural improvements and propose innovative solutions to emerging technical challenges
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related discipline
- Significant hands‑on experience developing FPGA systems in complex or high‑performance environments
- Strong experience with VHDL (or similar hardware description languages)
- Proven experience working with Xilinx FPGA devices (development, debugging, and porting)
- Experience across multiple FPGA vendors or device families
- Strong understanding of digital system design, including: Timing closure, FPGA architecture, Memory subsystems, High‑speed interfaces and system‑level trade‑offs
- Experience taking ownership of existing FPGA codebases and improving long‑term architecture
