Working arrangement: On-site in Cambridge, with flexible working hours

Employment: Full-time

The Opportunity

We’re working with a highly respected Cambridge-based engineering organisation at the forefront of open-source silicon development, looking for an experienced Technical Project Manager to join their team.

This is a hands‑on position taking ownership of complex ASIC, silicon subsystem and chip design projects for major commercial customers.

You’ll work closely with engineers across digital design, verification, firmware and embedded software, acting as the link between technical teams and customers to ensure projects are clearly defined, planned and delivered successfully.

Much of the work is consulting‑led, so this isn’t a role where you’ll manage projects at arm’s length. You’ll be directly involved with customers and engineering teams, managing requirements, scope, risks, timelines and deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.

The organisation collaborates with some of the biggest names in the semiconductor and technology industries, alongside leading academic and research institutions. Their work includes involvement in what is recognised as the world’s largest open‑source silicon project, making this a genuinely unusual opportunity within the Cambridge semiconductor market.

What You’ll Be Doing

Plan, track and manage complex ASIC, silicon subsystem and chip design projects for commercial customers.

Take ownership of project schedules, milestones, dependencies and deliverables.

Work closely with semiconductor engineers and technical leads throughout design and development.

Coordinate teams across digital design, verification, firmware and embedded software.

Act as a key point of contact between customers and internal engineering teams.

Work with engineering leads to draft and execute Statements of Work (SoWs).

Manage technical scope changes, requirements and project risks.

Coordinate external silicon partners and academic collaborators.

Manage tracking and compliance for grant‑funded R&D projects.

Build strong relationships across customers, engineers and external stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For

The key to this role is combining strong project management skills with genuine experience of ASIC design and development.

You’ll need:

  • 3-5+ years of Project Management experience within semiconductor, ASIC or a closely related technical environment.
  • A strong understanding of the ASIC/silicon development lifecycle.
  • Enough technical knowledge to work credibly with semiconductor engineers and design teams.
  • Experience managing schedules, requirements, dependencies, risks and technical deliverables.
  • Knowledge of areas such as digital design, verification, silicon design flows, FPGA, firmware and/or embedded software.
  • Experience coordinating cross‑functional engineering teams.
  • Strong customer, stakeholder and relationship management skills.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • The ability to work from the Cambridge office, either already living within commutable distance or being open to relocating.
  • You don’t need to be designing the ASIC yourself, but you do need to understand the development process well enough to effectively manage chip design projects and the engineers responsible for delivering them.
  • Experience within a UK semiconductor or chip start‑up would be particularly attractive, although candidates from larger semiconductor organisations are equally relevant where they have directly managed ASIC design projects.

PMP certification, or PRINCE2, APM or equivalent.

Experience within a semiconductor consultancy or customer‑facing engineering environment.

Experience within a semiconductor start‑up or scale‑up.

Familiarity with open‑source silicon communities and collaborative development.

Why Consider It?

You’ll be joining an organisation working at the intersection of ASIC design, semiconductors, embedded systems, open‑source technology and cutting‑edge research, collaborating with major international technology companies and academic institutions.

The role offers genuine ownership of technically challenging silicon projects, with direct exposure to both the engineers developing the technology and the customers using it.

The package includes:

  • Employer pension contribution up to 12.5%.
  • Private medical insurance.
  • Four‑week paid sabbatical after four years of service.

Our client is committed to providing an inclusive working environment and does not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, sex, age, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or any other protected characteristic.
