Job Description:

Who we are

Microchip\’s Caldicot site is responsible for designing and delivering the next generation of advanced electronic module solutions for global technology markets. Our expertise lies in delivering advanced packaging solutions to our customers where small size and high reliability are critical. Some of our markets include medical, automotive, aerospace, and renewable energy. We develop a wide range of module solutions, ranging from miniaturized implant medical devices to compound semiconductor power modules.

As a Power Module Design Engineer you will be required to research, design, develop and evaluate new packaging concepts, prototypes and products of the company’s next generation microelectronic modules. This position will allow you to become an integral part of a team of specialists in materials, mechanical, electronics and packaging engineers that strive to push the boundaries of conventional microelectronics packaging. About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to lead the electrical design and simulation of Si and SiC power modules. This role focuses on optimizing electrical performance, reliability, and manufacturability, using advanced design and simulation tools.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop electrical layouts and schematics for Si and SiC power modules
  • Perform electrical simulations to analyse circuit behaviour and optimize switching performance.
  • Conduct electromagnetic field simulations to minimize parasitic effects and ensure compliance to target module specifications.
  • Evaluate thermal performance in conjunction with electrical design
  • Select components, including power semiconductors, passive components, and interconnects, to meet performance requirements.
  • Optimize designs for electrical efficiency, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Support prototype builds and testing, analysing data to refine designs and improve performance.
  • Prepare detailed technical documentation, including schematics, simulation reports, and test plans.
  • Take on other engineering duties as required and assigned.
  • Travel internationally on occasion as requested.
  • Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in power module design, particularly with Si and SiC technologies.
  • Proficiency in Altium Designer for electrical schematics and layouts.
  • Experience with electrical simulation tools such as SPICE and PLECS.
  • Experience of electromagnetic simulation tools, such as ANSYS Q3D, ANSYS Maxwell, and thermal analysis tools like ANSYS Icepak.
  • Solid understanding of power semiconductor devices and loss mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with reliability and quality standards for power modules.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
