This role will be part of the Microchip Human Machine Interface Division (HMID) which is responsible for the development of multitouch capacitive sensing devices, known as maXTouch. Based in Whiteley, UK, the Business Unit is a centre of excellence for capacitive touch sensing. You will be working in a small but highly skilled team, as part of a wider organization both within the Whiteley office and worldwide.
We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our R&D team. This individual will drive the definition, design, and validation of next generation maXTouch controllers and system-level HMI solutions. They will be operating in a multidisciplinary environment (silicon, firmware, applications, sensor/mechanical).
An ideal candidate will be a genuine problem solver and analytically minded. The role requires strong digital design experience, with the ability to specify, prototype, and verify RTL design in preparation for new silicon.
Key Responsibilities:- Architect, implement, and validate Capacitive Touch Engine (CTE) spanning analog-front-end (AFE) acquisition control, digital signal acquisition/processing, and low-level firmware in assembly.
- Work in close collaboration with the chip design team and the Firmware team to define CTE acquisition sequencing, digital control for AFE-driven sensing and the digital signal processing.
- Work with the design team to define, verify and simulate the RTL to ensure the implemented IP operates as expected as part of the complete touch system.
- Develop performance-critical assembly routines that drive AFE acquisition and signal processing.
- Participate in silicon bring-up and feature validation.
- Work with firmware, validation, and lab teams to root-cause issues spanning AFE behavior, RTL sequencing, and low-level control path.
- Bachelor's Degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Physics, or related field; Master's preferred.
- 5+ years relevant industry experience in digital/mixed-signal IC design.
- Understanding of Micro-controller architecture and products.
- Good programming skills in Verilog, System Verilog, C.
- Expertise in RTL design, verification.
- Strong scripting skills (Python, Matlab or similar).
- Function as a team player, discrete, agile-minded, proactive, a clear communicator, and highly organized.
We believe the right candidate may not necessarily have all the qualifications today, but could be someone who can quickly grow into the position while contributing.
Desirable Skills:- Experience with PIC/ARM or other embedded MCU platforms.
- Familiarity with Automotive SPICE, ISO 26262, IEC/UL 60730, or functional safety flows.
- Capacitive touch sensing and signal processing.
- Experience with OLED, micro LED, or large format multitouch displays (industrial/automotive).
