Primary Purpose of the Role: As our clients' Global Xpress network continues to grow both in the number of ground stations and the number of remote satellite terminals using the network, the Platform Engineering team requires additional IP network expertise to support the operation, growth and technological development of the global network. The Senior IP Network Engineer will support our client's satellite IP connectivity and value-added services by providing IP engineering expertise and technical leadership for both core IP network and service functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical authority for the configuration, management and operation of a large estate of Cisco and Juniper routing and switching equipment.
  • Maintain and refine network documentation to ensure its accuracy and scope is sufficient for a complex network.
  • Route and Switch Subject Matter Expert supporting other teams as required.
  • Ensure that monitoring of the network is kept up to date and follow up on alarms and events to identify problem trends and take the appropriate action to mitigate them.
  • Providing training and knowledge transfer to other team members when new technology or systems are deployed to the network.
  • Ownership of end to end troubleshooting and resolution of faults in the network that are escalated to the Tier 3 team.
  • Take ownership of product lifecycle and ensure that networking equipment is maintained in accordance with the vendor's requirement at supported software versions.
  • Supporting the problem resolution cycle with vendors from initial reporting of bugs/issues through solution design, testing and deployment of patches and release to the live network.
  • Support deployment and acceptance testing of new ground stations and new satellite services.
  • Provide out of hours support to the NOC as part of the on-call operations engineering team.

Key Knowledge and Skills:

  • Cisco CCNP or Juniper JNCIP or above in appropriate technology areas such as routing and switch, data centre or ISP.
  • Advanced level of hands-on experience with Cisco IOS or Junos.
  • Advanced knowledge of virtualization techniques with particular emphasis on connectivity and networking, hands-on experience in managing large distributed MPLS networks.
  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Able to work with minimum supervision and to lead the resolution of issues through to completion.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to present ideas and improvements in an effective and persuasive manner.
  • A practical approach to problem-solving with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Positive attitude to collaborating and solving problems involving multiple groups and technologies and ability to steer and facilitate a cohesive resolution to the benefit of our client's business.

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Cloud technologies such as vMX.
  • Advanced knowledge of firewall configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Linux system administration and scripting.
  • Multicast, PIM, IGMPv2/v3.

Sphere Of Influence of the Position:

This is an operational role where good communications skills, a keen sense of responsibility, cooperation and a pro-active approach are required. The Senior IP Network Engineer will be expected to take ownership of network issues and provide leadership to ensure that they are resolved and that appropriate corrective measures are put in place to prevent reoccurrence of the same issues.
