Title: Special Education Teacher Consultant – Deaf and Hard of Hearing Total Communications Program

Classification: KIEA

Reports to and Evaluated by: Administer of Total Communication

Terms of Employment: 182 Day Position – subject to all rules and regulations covering KIEA Teachers

BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Teacher Consultant for Students Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing is responsible for supporting the academic, social-emotional, and communication needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) across a range of educational settings. This role involves collaboration with general and special education staff, families, and related service providers to ensure appropriate access to curriculum, classroom instruction, and school activities. The consultant provides expertise in hearing loss, instructional strategies, and accommodations to promote educational equity and student success. The teacher will work collaboratively with district teams to provide specially designed instruction in the areas determined by each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide consultation and support to general and special education teachers regarding instructional strategies, classroom modifications, and accommodations for students who are Deaf and hard of hearing

  • Able to deliver specialized instruction using American Sign Language in a differentiated capacity based on the needs of the students

  • Conduct functional listening assessments and assist in evaluating the impact of hearing loss on educational performance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and review Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Collect, maintain, and analyze data relating to students’ acquisition of functional, community – referenced skills.
  • Facilitate the provision and proper use of assistive technology, including FM systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and captioning tools.
  • Support students in developing self-advocacy skills and strategies for accessing communication and curriculum in various educational environments.
  • Provide direct instruction or consultation in areas such as auditory skills, language development, communication strategies, and social-emotional learning, when indicated by the IEP.
  • Document and share student progress on goals and objectives, accommodations, service time, and discipline/suspensions for all students on caseload.
  • Assist with transition planning for students moving between educational levels or into postsecondary settings.
  • Conduct training and provide resources for school staff and families to increase understanding of hearing loss and effective educational practices.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, audiologists, and other community

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Master’s Degree in Education from an accredited
  • Special Education Certification with D/HH
  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated success in special education classroom working with students with D/HH.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Thorough understanding of the educational and developmental impact of hearing loss in children and adolescents.
  • Ability to communicate informational ideas in spoken, written, and American Sign Language for clear understanding.
  • Knowledge of auditory development, amplification technology, and the use of assistive listening devices in school settings.
  • Familiarity with federal and state laws related to special education (IDEA, Section 504, ADA).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including teachers, administrators, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and parents.
  • Skilled in adapting curriculum and instruction to meet diverse communication needs, including sign language, spoken language, cued speech, and other visual supports.

Salary:Per KIEA Master Agreement/ Commensurate with education and experience (BA Step 1-5 = $51,106-$61,927/year; BA+18 Step 1-5 = $54,644-$64,531/year; MA Step 1-5 = $57,766-68,695/year; MA+15 Step 1-5 = $60,370-$71,821/year; MA+MA,MA+30 Step 1-5 = $62,972-$74,423/year).
