Part II Architectural Assistant / Conservation Graduate

Michael Swords Studio is seeking a Part II Architectural Assistant or a recent graduate with a Conservation MA to support the studio’s growing portfolio of listed building, heritage consultancy and ecclesiastical projects. The practice specialises in conservation projects, heritage consultancy, and design within existing buildings, working with churches, historic buildings, and private clients across London and the wider UK.

The role offers the opportunity to work closely with the studio director on conservation projects, condition surveys, heritage reports, quinquennial inspections, and adaptations of existing buildings, gaining practical experience in historic building conservation. The successful candidate will assist with historic building surveys, measured drawings, heritage research, and the preparation of conservation reports and applications for listed building consent and faculty approval. The role will involve supporting conservation design proposals and preparing documentation for planning and heritage submissions. The position is intended as a mentorship opportunity for an early-career architect or heritage graduate.

The successful applicant will work closely with the studio principal across a range of heritage projects, gaining practical experience in building inspections, conservation reports, and the adaptation of historic structures.

• Essential
• Part II qualification in Architecture, or MA in a conservation-related subject
• Strong drawing ability (AutoCAD or equivalent)
• Excellent written English and strong report-writing skills
• Interest in historic buildings and traditional construction
• Organised and able to work independently within a small practice environment
• Desirable
• Experience working on heritage or listed building projects
• Familiarity with UK planning and heritage policy
• Interest in ecclesiastical architecture or church buildings; experience assisting with measured surveys or building inspections
• Knowledge of Revit desirable but not essential

Salary: £28,000 - £36,000 depending on experience

Location: Somerset House, London (hybrid working, combining studio, site and remote work)

Start Date: Late May or June 2026 (negotiable)
