Harbour Healthcare is recruiting for a Maintenance Assistant in Harrogate. Your role includes ensuring all legal documents are completed, day‑to‑day maintenance of the building fabric, services and grounds, and keeping the Care Centre safe and efficient. You will be available on call only for emergencies.

Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications

  • General maintenance knowledge / experience such as minor electrical, plumbing, joinery work.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Confident team player.
  • Clean driving licence.
  • Use of a car or similar vehicle.
  • Willingness to receive training on Health & Safety / EHO issues.
  • Satisfactory Police check and check against the POVA List (where applicable).

Desired:

  • Understanding of central heating systems, laundry equipment and hot & cold water systems.
  • Knowledge of current Health & Safety regulations.

Main Responsibilities

  • Ensure all legal documentation is completed on time.
  • Report known defects to the Home Manager.
  • Maintain the Care Centre’s exterior, including sheds, outbuildings, waste storage, drive, paths, gardens, signs and lighting.
  • Clear snow, grit driveways, and maintain safe access for clients, visitors and staff.
  • Carry out touch‑ups and maintenance of decoration.
  • Test fire alarm system, call points, fire exits, emergency lights weekly, and log results.
  • Ensure ventilation units and lights are clean; replace defective bulbs.
  • Test portable appliances as specified.
  • Record water temperatures as specified.
  • Maintain a “Maintenance Book” to record defects and drive daily repairs.
  • Assist/supervise deliveries to the Care Centre.
  • Liaise with the Home Manager or delegated staff regarding maintenance work.
  • Participate in staff and client meetings as required.
  • Attend mandatory training days/courses on or off site.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and competence.
  • Store paints and varnishes according to manufacturers’ instructions.
  • Ventilate painting/varnishing areas safely.
  • Report illnesses or accidents promptly.
  • Implement the Care Centre’s Health and Safety policy, emergency, and fire procedures.
  • Promote safe working practice throughout the Care Centre.
