A growing engineering business is looking for a Design Engineer to deliver bespoke projects from concept through to production and commissioning. The role involves hands–on mechanical design, working closely with customers and internal teams to deliver cost–effective, compliant solutions.

This is an established UK–based manufacturer specialising in the design and build of custom automated equipment for a range of industrial sectors. The business is experiencing steady growth and places a strong emphasis on innovation, collaboration, and developing tailored engineering solutions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work directly with customers to understand requirements and support the quoting/tender process
  • Develop conceptual designs and engineer practical, effective solutions
  • Produce detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings to recognised standards (e.g. BS8888)
  • Create accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support downstream manufacturing processes
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant regulations, quality standards and H&S requirements
  • Coordinate with cross–functional teams including production, buying, sales and service
  • Provide project updates and manage design approvals with internal and external stakeholders
  • Support projects through manufacture, build and commissioning phases
  • Occasional site visits, including potential overnight stays

The successful candidate:

  • Qualified in Mechanical Engineering (Apprenticeship, HNC, HND, Degree or equivalent)
  • Around 2+ years' experience in a Design Engineer role
  • Proficient in 3D CAD (any mainstream package)
  • Experience working with design data management systems (PDM or similar)
  • Exposure to ERP/MRP systems would be beneficial
  • Practical, hands–on mindset with the ability to test and validate concepts
  • Strong problem–solving skills and able to manage multiple projects effectively
  • Confident communicator, comfortable liaising with customers and internal teams
  • High attention to detail with a strong focus on delivering quality solutions
