Michael Page are delighted to be retained with our client, Slater Menswear to recruit a Payroll Lead. This role will take full ownership of the end-to-end payroll process for circa 800 employees. This is a pivotal, standalone role within a high-performing finance function, offering real autonomy, responsibility, and influence across the business. Slater Menswear is a renowned, market leading, family-owned menswear retailer headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland. Established in 1973, the company has grown into a national brand with 27 stores across the UK, all while maintaining its commitment to exceptional service and quality. This role will work out of the flagship head office in Glasgow City Centre and offers a hybrid working model.

Description

The successful candidate will likely have the following responsibilities:

  • Deliver accurate, timely end-to-end payroll for approximately 800 employees on weekly and 4-weekly cycles.
  • Maintain full ownership of payroll processing including calculations, validation, submissions, and reporting.
  • Manage tax code changes, statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP), holiday pay, pensions, and deductions.
  • Produce payroll reports and reconciliations for Finance and senior stakeholders.
  • Act as the main point of contact for payroll-related queries across the business.
  • Ensure compliance with HMRC regulations, RTI submissions, and payroll legislation.
  • Continuously review and improve payroll processes and controls.
  • Work closely with the Head of HR on employee lifecycle activities including onboarding, offboarding, sickness, maternity and other absences.
  • Support HR with accurate payroll data, reports, and insights.
  • Provide guidance to managers and HR on payroll-related matters.

Profile

The successful candidate will likely have the following profile:

  • Proven experience in a sole or lead payroll role within an industry environment.
  • Confident running start-to-finish payroll processes with minimal supervision.
  • Strong technical payroll knowledge including statutory payments, pensions, and tax.
  • Comfortable working independently while collaborating with Finance and HR colleagues.
  • Able to challenge stakeholders constructively and influence best practice.
  • Highly organised, detail-oriented, and accountable.
  • Systems savvy with strong Excel and reporting capabilities.
  • Experience in Staffology is desirable but not essential.
