Role Overview
The Principal Epidemiologist, within the Scientific Data & Insight function, will drive methodological innovation and modernise vigilance systems. The role involves developing advanced epidemiological methods, leading cross‑cutting projects, building strategic partnerships, securing external funding, and providing expert advice to senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and application of advanced epidemiological methods to address complex regulatory challenges.
- Identify and anticipate evidence gaps, delivering innovative real‑world data analyses to inform regulatory decision making and public health protection.
- Build and maintain strategic collaborations with academic, regulatory, and healthcare partners (UK and international).
- Proactively identify and secure external research funding opportunities, preparing high‑quality proposals.
- Represent the MHRA on national and international expert committees, advisory panels, and working groups.
- Provide authoritative advice and thought leadership on methodological and regulatory issues to senior agency leadership and government partners.
- Disseminate findings through high‑impact publications, presentations, and stakeholder engagement.
- Mentor colleagues, foster innovation, and contribute to building in‑house expertise in pharmacoepidemiology and device epidemiology.
Qualifications
- Expertise in advanced pharmacoepidemiology methods.
- Proven ability to shape organisational culture and strategic direction.
- Recognised thought leader evidenced by publications, invited keynotes, advisory roles, or leadership of expert working groups (nationally and internationally).
- Strong record of high‑impact scientific publications, as first or senior author.
- Deep expertise in real‑world data assets, including advanced analytics in a regulatory or public health context.
Technical Criteria
- Doctoral qualification (or equivalent advanced experience) in epidemiology, statistics, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
- Extensive expertise in design, implementation and critical appraisal of advanced epidemiological and statistical methods.
- Advanced proficiency in programming and computational epidemiology; expert‑level skills in Python, R, or Stata for handling large, linked healthcare datasets.
