The Business Assurance team is responsible for ensuring that MHR meets its legal, regulatory, and industry standards across a broad range of areas including data protection, risk, quality, and environmental management. As part of this dynamic and growing team, you will work alongside subject matter experts to deliver excellence in assurance and compliance. With increased focus on sustainability and environmental accountability, this role is vital in ensuring MHR’s operations remain responsible, resilient, and forward-thinking.
This is a senior opportunity for an experienced Environmental Compliance Specialist to lead MHR’s environmental compliance and sustainability strategy as part of the wider Business Assurance function. You will be responsible for the delivery and ongoing development of our ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management System (EMS), ensuring continued compliance, driving continuous improvement, and supporting the organisation’s journey towards its Net Zero commitments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development, implementation, and continual improvement of MHR’s Environmental Management System in line with ISO 14001.
- Maintain legal compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and obligations.
- Drive sustainability initiatives and support the achievement of corporate Net Zero and carbon reduction targets.
- Develop, review, and maintain environmental policies, procedures, and documentation.
- Conduct internal environmental audits and manage the external audit process.
- Support the delivery of training and awareness programmes to promote environmental responsibility across the business.
- Collect, analyse, and report on key environmental performance data, including energy, waste, water, and emissions.
- Provide subject matter expertise to internal projects and stakeholders, ensuring environmental considerations are embedded into decision-making.
- Identify and manage environmental risks, ensuring proactive mitigation is in place.
- Collaborate with the wider Business Assurance team to ensure alignment between environmental, quality, and compliance activities.
What you’ll bring to the role and MHR:
- Essential: Experience in environmental compliance, preferably in a corporate or regulated environment.
- In-depth knowledge of ISO 14001 and proven success in implementing and maintaining a certified EMS.
- Strong understanding of environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks in the UK.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence, engage, and educate stakeholders at all levels.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong report writing and data analysis skills.
- Desirable: Professional qualification in environmental management (e.g. IEMA, NEBOSH Environmental, or equivalent).
- Experience of working within or alongside compliance, audit, or risk teams.
- Understanding of carbon foot printing and sustainability frameworks (e.g. GHG Protocol, SBTi).
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 27001 or other management system standards.
