The role

As a Workplace Assessor, you’ll develop and assess employees and modern apprentices in real workplaces. You’ll coach learners, observe professional practice, and evaluate evidence against national standards set by SQA, Skills Development Scotland and Sector Skills Councils. You’ll also play a part in growing programme participation by engaging employers and prospective learners.

You’ll be great at: building rapport, giving constructive feedback, organising your time, and keeping accurate records to both MGT and regulatory standards.

What you’ll do

  • Assess & coach learners through regular workplace visits (in‑person and virtual), giving clear, actionable feedback and supportive direction
  • Observe practice and assess competence against national/occupational standards
  • Guide evidence collection (work product, observation, witness testimony, reflective accounts)
  • Communicate effectively with learners, employers, colleagues and regulatory bodies (SQA, SDS)
  • Grow the programme Help us grow the programme by confidently enrolling new starts and engaging employers—against clear, transparent benchmarks
  • Own your schedule: plan your diary and routes for an efficient caseload across your region

What you’ll bring

  • L&D9DI (formerly A1) Assessor qualification (essential)
  • Occupational competence in Hospitality, Management, Retail and/or Business (essential)
  • Strong sector knowledge across these areas and current assessment practice and industry standards
  • Full UK Category B licence (≤6 points) and access to a car for regional travel
  • Flexible availability: occasional evenings/weekends in line with employer/learner needs
  • People skills: excellent communication, relationship‑building and professionalism
  • Sales mindset: confidence in introducing relevant qualifications to employers and learners to hit agreed targets

  • Structured induction and shadowing before taking your own caseload
  • Employer Engagement understands what makes the employers and employees tick
  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD): maintain a monthly CPD log; we request a copy at least annually and may review more frequently for external audits
  • Clear pathways to senior assessor, IQA/quality roles, or sector specialist positions, and opportunities to work towards your L&D 11 (Internal Verifier)

A typical week

  • 80% workplace visits/learner contact (including assessment)
  • 10% planning/admin/portfolio work (including MA Online)
  • 10% employer engagement and programme growth activity

Travel & location

This role covers Glasgow, Tayside & Fife. You’ll plan efficient routes and manage your own diary, balancing in‑person visits with remote assessment and coordinating with learners and employers where possible.
