The M&G plc Life Investment Office (LIO) is responsible for the management of M&G Life’s With-Profits, Annuity and Unit-Linked funds, with more than £150bn of funds under management. LIO works closely with the various asset management businesses within the M&G plc Group, and other external managers, to structure multi-asset portfolios aligned with the investment objectives of our clients.

The Derivative Management Group, whilst sitting within Life, also supports the wider M&G group including the asset manager, the central group and treasury. It is a centre of excellence providing derivative expertise in dealing, fund management and the overlay of hedging programs.

The Director within the Derivative Management Group is a senior specialist role within LIO, working closely with wider LIO and M&G Group teams on Asset Liability Management (ALM), investment hedging, and derivatives based initiatives. The role has accountability for the Asset Owner hedging framework and plays a critical role in the design, implementation, and ongoing risk management of hedging strategies.

The role holder will act as a subject matter expert, providing technical leadership, commercial insight, and constructive challenge to ensure hedging activities are robust, policy compliant, and aligned with business objectives across M&G Life and the wider Group.

Key Responsibilities for this Role:
  • Hedging & ALM Leadership
    • Maintain, and enhance the Asset Owner hedging framework for M&G Life, ensuring alignment with policy, regulatory requirements, and best practice.
    • Review, assess, and challenge ALM hedging strategies across insurance businesses and, where relevant, the wider M&G Group.
    • Support the design, implementation, and ongoing risk management of hedging programmes.
    • Provide technical expertise to ensure effective risk mitigation and capital outcomes.
    • Contribute to the analysis of new hedging requirements, strategies and product development.
  • Business & Strategic Support
    • Engage with business stakeholders to understand requirements and develop suitable ALM solutions and derivatives based investment or product ideas.
    • Support the development and execution of broader business initiatives, projects, and change programmes involving derivatives and risk management.
    • Provide indicative derivative pricing and technical input to support group entities and business decision making.
  • Stakeholder & Counterparty Engagement
    • Maintain relationships with external derivative counterparties and service providers, ensuring strong governance, execution quality, and commercial outcomes.
    • Build and maintain trusted relationships with internal stakeholders across investment, risk, finance, actuarial, and product teams.
    • Act as a knowledgeable and credible point of contact for complex hedging and derivatives related matters.
    • Assist with operational processes such as confirmations, collateral and lifecycle management of derivative trades.
Key Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
  • Substantial experience in an investment, ALM, or hedging function with a strong understanding of life insurance investment strategies and financial instruments, including derivatives.
  • Deep understanding of the needs and risk profiles of M&G Life business lines (With-Profits, Annuities, Unit-Linked) and MGG.
  • Working knowledge of investment related regulation and relevant insurance and prudential regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex stakeholder environments with competing priorities.
Desirable
  • Proven experience designing or overseeing large scale hedging programmes.
  • Experience providing technical challenge and governance oversight within a regulated insurance environment. Actuarial experience.
  • Track record of contributing to strategic initiatives and business change involving derivatives or risk management.
