Role Overview: MGH are looking for a highly capable Electrical Test Technician with proven refrigeration systems experience, strong testing, fault-finding, and diagnostic skills, and the ability to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions for our customers in the Rail industry. This is a customer-facing role requiring both deep technical expertise and commercial awareness. You will take ownership of diagnosing complex system issues, advising customers on repair vs replacement options and ensuring work is completed efficiently, safely and to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Electrical Testing, Fault-Finding & Diagnostics
- Carry out detailed electrical testing on refrigeration and cooling systems, including motors, control panels, sensors, safety circuits and power supplies.
- Perform advanced fault-finding and diagnostics on electrical, control, and refrigeration-related issues.
- Interpret wiring diagrams, schematics and control logic to identify root causes of failures.
- Use test equipment effectively to validate system performance and compliance.
- Verify system operation following repair or modification and complete functional testing.
- Install, commission, maintain and repair commercial and industrial refrigeration systems.
- Support electrical aspects of refrigeration plant, chillers, cold rooms, and integrated HVAC systems.
- Ensure all work complies with BS 7671, Health & Safety legislation, and industry best practice.
- Provide technical leadership on-site and support junior engineers when required.
- Engage directly with customers to explain faults, risks, and recommended corrective actions.
- Assess multiple repair options and propose cost-effective, value-driven solutions aligned to customer budgets and operational needs.
- Clearly communicate short-term fixes versus long-term improvement options.
- Produce clear job reports, test results, and service documentation.
- Accurately record job costs and support or raise invoices based on completed works.
- Identify opportunities to reduce downtime, energy usage, or future maintenance costs.
- Manage workload across customer sites within the North East of England and the wider UK.
- Liaise with office teams on scheduling, parts ordering, job completion, and invoicing.
- Participate in customer site callouts as required.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Experience as an Electrical Test Engineer, ideally within refrigeration or HVAC environments.
- Strong, demonstrable experience in electrical testing, fault-finding, and diagnostics.
- Electrical qualifications (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent).
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations / IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
- Proven ability to assess faults and recommend cost-effective solutions to customers.
- Comfortable in customer-facing situations, explaining technical issues clearly.
- Experience completing service documentation and supporting invoicing processes.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Right to work in the UK.
- F-Gas Category 1 or refrigeration-related qualifications.
- Experience with control systems, BMS, PLCs, or inverter drives.
- Supervisory or mentoring experience.
- Background in commercial, industrial, food production, retail, or healthcare sectors.
