Applications are invited for a Senior Locally Employed Doctor in paediatric Epilepsy based at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH). The successful candidate will join a vibrant and dynamic paediatric neurology department composed of 11 Consultant Paediatric Neurologists.
The Manchester Paediatric Neurology Service provides tertiary level care for children with neurological disorders throughout the North West of England. This is achieved through a region-wide PICU retrieval service for acute emergencies, a dedicated paediatric neuroscience inpatient facility on ward 78 and outpatient services provided at RMCH and through a network of outreach clinics across the region.
Main duties of the job
This post is ideally suited to a locally employed doctor wanting to work within a busy complex epilepsy service with a comprehensive range of epilepsy treatments and specialised clinics, a busy neurophysiology department, and RMCH being one of four nationally commissioned Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service centres, in partnership with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
There are numerous opportunities to contribute to teaching and education as well as research and audit. The post-holder will build on experience within paediatric epilepsy, including complex epilepsy services such as ketogenic diet, VNS, tuberous sclerosis, cannabidiol, and epilepsy surgery services. Experienced will be gained within an inpatient and outpatient setting.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

What is a DBS Check?
A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:
Standard DBS : Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.
Enhanced DBS : Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role.
Enhanced with Barred Lists : Includes all of the above, plus checks against the children’s and/or adults’ barred lists.
Who Needs a DBS Check
Most roles involving direct patient contact, working with children or vulnerable adults, or access to sensitive information will require a DBS check. The job advert and recruitment team will let you know if this applies to your role.
The Costs for a DBS
At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment. If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.
Candidates are also expected to register with the DBS Update Service which must be completed within 30 days of the certificate being issued. This helps streamline future employment checks and supports safer recruitment practices. For more information, please visit the DBS Update Service.

Qualifications and Training
- MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification
- Full MRCPCH or equivalent
- CCT gained or pending within 6 months, or eligibility for equivalent route to Specialist Register
Clinical Experience:
- Considerable experience in paediatrics at speciality registrar level
- Demonstratable previous experience of paediatric neurology within a paediatric neurology unit
- Neonatal intensive care paediatrics experience Community Paediatrics (developmental paediatrics and child protection) experience
- Experience of resuscitation of infants and children
- Completion of post-graduate paediatric training
