Job overview

This is a one-year fellowship post based in the Cardiothoracic Transplant Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital. The centre is one of the 5 UK adult cardiothoracic transplant centres, specialising in heart and lung transplantation, ECMO and ventricular assist devices. The role is designed to provide advanced experience in cardiothoracic transplant, intensive care medicine, ECMO and mechanical circulatory support, respiratory medicine and cardiology. The appointee will work within a large multidisciplinary team specialising in the assessment and management of cardiothoracic transplant patients, and patients with end stage respiratory and cardiac disease, working alongside cardiothoracic transplant surgeons, intensivists and other specialist teams.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Holds acceptable primary medical qualification
  • At least 3 years of full-time equivalent postgraduate training in Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Competence in managing cardiothoracic emergencies.
  • An appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • A commitment to personal CPD
  • Awards/distinctions whilst studying for 1st degree
  • Logbook
  • Valid Life Support Course (ACLS, ALS, ATLS, APLS or similar)
  • Involvement in Research & Publication

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

  • Evidence of GIM clinical competencies, including the management of medical emergencies
  • Evidence of clinical competencies in sternotomy, cannulation for initiation of cardio-pulmonary bypass, bronchoscopy skills
  • Engaged in medical practice for 3 out of last 5 years including the most recent 12 months
  • Not previously been turned down for sponsorship by an GMC approved sponsor

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and other people within a team
  • Ability to work as a team with professional colleagues in all disciplines
  • Self-awareness, with knowledge of personal strengths and weaknesses, impact and areas for development
  • Interest in and knowledge of the importance of leadership and management for clinicians
  • English Language Skills: Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues and be demonstrated by having ( the following scores in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Overall 7.5
  • Presentations at regional, national or international meetings

AUDIT AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

  • Participation in audit and quality improvement
  • Research experience
