About the Role
This role provides operational metrology support for precision measurement across forging, machining, and assembly operations. The position is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of a world-class metrology strategy that strengthens our measurement systems and capabilities and supports long‑term business objectives.
As a condition of employment successful candidates are required to satisfy ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliance and must fulfil the following before commencing this role:
- Currently hold the legal Right to Work in the UK
- Fulfil a DBS clearance
- Provide a consistent 5-year UK domicile
- Pass Drugs & Alcohol screening at the start of their Mettis employment
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out dimensional inspections of forged and machined aerospace components using blue‑light scanning systems, CMMs, and other metrology tools
- Develop, optimise, and maintain inspection programs and workflows to support Machining, Forge, and Aerostructures value streams
- Perform detailed analysis of 3D measurement data, including surface deviation reports, GD&T evaluation, and process trend analysis, to support quality and engineering decisions
- Provide metrology support for NPI projects, including measurement feasibility and inspection method development for new forgings and machined parts
- Problem‑solve measurement issues and support Engineering with root‑cause analysis, capability studies, and process improvement activities
- Work closely with Production, Quality, and Engineering teams to ensure that measurement strategies align with customer requirements
- Support the implementation of the metrology strategy to transition to improved workflows, better data integrity, consistent measurement processes, and equipment and software upgrades
- Maintain calibration and operational readiness of all metrology equipment, ensuring compliance with AS9100 and customer‑specific standards, including master samples
- Produce clear and accurate technical reports that help teams understand dimensional performance and drive quality improvements
- Implement SPC analysis through the introduction of measurement data management tools
Relevant Skills
Essential
- Proven capability with blue‑light 3D scanning systems, including fixture setup and scanning methodology
- Use of CMMs (Zeiss, Mitutoyo, Hexagon, or similar) and portable metrology equipment
- Experience in measurement data management software such as PiWeb or MeasureLink
- An understanding of metrology principles, GD&T, alignment methods, datum strategies, and tolerance evaluation
- Ability to confidently read technical drawings, understand aerospace tolerances, and work with complex CAD data
- Problem‑solving skills and ability to communicate measurement findings clearly to the engineering team management
- Ability to analyse detailed SPC data methodically and consistently to conclude
- Ability to work independently and proactively manage priorities
Desirable
- Hands‑on experience with Zeiss Inspect (GOM Inspect / Zeiss Quality Suite)
- The application of APQP, DFM, 8D, and other core engineering tools
- Experience with PC‑DMIS, Calypso, Zeiss Inspect programming, or similar metrology software
Qualifications
Essential
- Degree or equivalent experience within Aerospace Engineering, or relevant subject
Desirable
- Professional Engineering status (e.g., EngTech, IEng, CEng) registered with an Engineering Council‑affiliated Institution
