About the Role

The Blue Light Scanning Operator / Inspector will work within the Quality team and play an important role in verifying the dimensional accuracy of precision forged and machined aerospace components. Using Zeiss Hawk 2 handheld scanning equipment and Zeiss Inspect software, you will carry out dimensional inspections to confirm product conformity against engineering drawings and customer specifications. The role supports Manufacturing, Quality and Engineering teams by providing accurate inspection data, assisting with New Product Introduction (NPI) activities and helping resolve dimensional queries across the Forge, Machining and Aerostructures value streams. You will ensure inspection activities are completed accurately, efficiently and in line with production priorities, whilst maintaining the integrity of inspection equipment and quality records.

As a condition of employment successful candidates are required to satisfy ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliance and must fulfil the following before commencing this role:

  • Currently hold the legal Right to Work in the UK
  • Pass Drugs & Alcohol screening at the start of their Mettis employment

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Carry out dimensional inspection of forged and machined aerospace components using the Zeiss Hawk 2 handheld scanner and Zeiss Inspect (GOM Inspect / Zeiss Quality Suite).
  • Operate blue-light scanning equipment in accordance with approved inspection procedures.
  • Use existing inspection programmes and scanning workflows to support the Forge, Machining and Aerostructures value streams.
  • Produce dimensional inspection reports, including surface deviation analysis and GD&T evaluation where required.
  • Assist Engineering and Quality teams by investigating dimensional queries and providing accurate inspection results.
  • Ensure scanning activities are completed in line with production priorities and customer requirements.
  • Carry out routine equipment checks and daily calibration to ensure measurement accuracy.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and ensure inspection data is stored and communicated appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with Production, Engineering and Quality teams to support manufacturing operations.
Safety Responsibilities
  • Comply with all Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) policies and procedures.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and follow safe working practices at all times.
  • Report hazards, unsafe conditions and near misses promptly.
  • Support a safe and tidy working environment.
Quality Responsibilities
  • Ensure all inspections are completed in accordance with customer specifications and internal quality requirements.
  • Verify product conformity against engineering drawings and dimensional requirements.
  • Maintain accurate inspection documentation in line with the Quality Management System.
  • Escalate any non-conforming products or dimensional concerns through the appropriate quality processes.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of inspection methods and quality standards.
Delivery Responsibilities
  • Complete inspection activities within agreed production timescales.
  • Prioritise workload to support manufacturing and customer delivery requirements.
  • Communicate inspection status effectively with Production, Quality and Engineering teams.
Cost Responsibilities
  • Help minimise scrap and rework through accurate and timely dimensional inspection.
  • Promote effective use of inspection equipment and resources.
  • Support improvements that enhance inspection efficiency and reduce waste.
People Responsibilities
  • Build effective working relationships across Manufacturing, Engineering and Quality teams.
  • Communicate technical information clearly and professionally.
  • Support colleagues and contribute positively to team objectives.
  • Comply with all Mettis HR policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Engineering apprenticeship, NVQ, HNC/HND or equivalent practical experience in inspection, manufacturing or engineering is desirable.
  • Experience within aerospace or another high-integrity manufacturing environment is advantageous.
  • Experience using blue-light scanning equipment or advanced dimensional inspection equipment is desirable.

Required Skills

  • Experience using Zeiss Inspect (GOM Inspect / Zeiss Quality Suite) or similar inspection software.
  • Experience operating blue-light scanning systems such as Zeiss Hawk 2, ATOS, ScanBox or equivalent.
  • Good understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T and dimensional inspection techniques.
  • Experience inspecting forged and machined components within a manufacturing environment.
  • Good attention to detail and a methodical approach to inspection activities.
  • Ability to interpret inspection results and communicate findings clearly.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload.
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Commitment to quality, accuracy and continuous improvement.

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Location: Redditch, Worcestershire (on site, 5 days)

Hours: Monday – Thursday: 07:30 – 16:30 & Friday: 07:30 – 12:30

Pension: 3% Employer & 5% Employee contribution
