Salary

The starting salary is £45,070 which includes allowances totalling £3,009. The salary is broken down as £42,061 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £43,838. Plus, a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

The police vehicle fleet is an important physical asset. It enables officers and staff to do their job, carries key equipment required, and provides safe transportation for the public / prisoners.

The role of Fleet Services is to keep the Met mobile, ensuring we can detect, respond to, and prevent crime whilst building public trust and confidence. The complexneedsof modern policing requires a wide range of vehicle types. Weoperatea fleet of over 5,200 assets on the road and river, as well as over 1,000 pedal cycles.London is the most complex and diverse city in the UK, and our fleet is reflective of that. We currently have over 220different typesof vehicles supporting all operational commands including armed response vehicles, HGVs, patrol cars,motorbikesand pedal cycles.

Customers can be broadly grouped into three strategic pillars – Frontline Policing, Met Ops & Performance, and Counter Terrorism / Specialist Operations. Collectively this covers pan London requirements as well as national CT responsibilities.

The overall fleet requirements and volumes are owned and governed by operational leaders at the Strategic Fleet Board. Operational teams are accountable for the volume of fleetrequiredto undertake their roles, and Fleet Services support and enable effective decision making through provision of information and technical / industry knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

• Vehicle maintenance- Maintain fleet within Fleet Services’ specialist workshop by providing efficient scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on the vehicle fleet. Reduce vehicle maintenance costs and maximise fleet availability by ensuring work on the vehicle fleet is timely and necessary. Follow multiple manufacturers’ repair instructions, specific methods and techniques. Accurately determine the serviceability of all vehicle components, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic; using industry recognised tools and equipment.
• Warranty jobs- Accurately follow the ‘end to end’ process for each manufacturer’s warranty process.
• Inspection and diagnosis- Visually inspect and road test vehicles, interpreting feedback from the vehicle’s correct function. Diagnose electrical faults accurately, using high and low technology electrical test equipment to ensure they achieve minimum (or exceed) vehicle manufacturers’ standards. Maintain high technology test equipment to configure / reconfigure the appropriate system correctly.
• Data / Information- Accurately record obtained measurements and data on completed work, compiling technical reports where necessary. Read, interpret and analyse wiring diagrams, making use of interactive guides available from various manufacturers’ diagnostic equipment and web-based mediums.
• Development / training- Take responsibility for personal development and keep up to date with relevant standards and legislation.
• Support colleagues–Support the Technical Supervisors tomaintainthe delivery of an effective and efficient service.Transfer knowledge and skills to apprentices /lesstechnical staff
• MPS knowledge and utilisation– Continuously understand Met activity and decision making to assess potential impact on local delivery.

Additional Information

The role will be Monday to Friday and the hours are mixture of 0700 to 1500hrs and 0800 to 1600hrs.

Successful candidates will be expected to remain in their initial role for 2 years before applying for any other internal roles.

This role does not attract Shift Disturbance Allowance. If you are currently in a shift-working role, SDA should cease upon appointment to this job.

• Fleet Services- Understands how fleet services work.
• Health & Safety– Good working knowledge of Health and Safety, Risk Assessment and COSHH regulations in Motor Vehicle Repair and Associated Industries (HSG261)
• Police Equipment– knowledge ofadditionalPolice warning and communication systems. Knowledge of specific vehicle conversions and unique specialist on-board equipment
• Examination -In-depth knowledge of all vehicle examination processes for maintenance and repair in line with Police policy and Driver Vehicle Standards Agency
• Maintenance and Repair–. Must have in-depth knowledge of all vehicle platforms and operating systems including mechanical,hydraulicand electrical systems for all makes of vehicles. Knowledge of all maintenance and repair procedures, the measured tools and calculationsrequiredto make professional decisions on serviceability of all safety related items. Knowledge of all vehicle manufacturers’ vehicle warranty processes and diagnostic equipment.
• Workshop tools and equipment- All workshop tools, machinery and equipment and a full understanding of its intended use and calibration requirements.

Skills

• Serviceability –Must be able to accuratelydeterminethe serviceability of all vehicle components, mechanical,electricaland hydraulic, using industry recognised tools and equipment
• Inspection –Must have the ability to visually inspect and road test vehicles, interpreting feedback from the vehicles correct function
• Electrical faults –Mustpossessability to diagnose electrical faults accurately
• Processes and instructions –Must have ability to accurately follow the ‘end-to-end’ process for each manufactures warranty process. Must have the ability to interpret and follow multiple manufacturer repair instructions, following specific methods and techniques.
• Data / analysis –Must have ability to accurately record obtained measurements and data on completed work, compiling technical reports where necessary. Ability to read, interpret and analyse wiring diagrams, making use of interactive guides available from various manufacturers’ diagnostic equipment andweb basedmediums.
• Communication and interpersonal skills –Good level of communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to communicate with staff and officers of all levels, along with ability to work as part of a team

Experience

• Industry experience– at least 3years relevant experience within thevehicle maintenance andrepair industry
• Manufacturers –Working with a wide range of manufacturers(desirable)
• Certifications / Apprenticeship–NVQ Level 3 in vehicle maintenance and repair (or equivalent). DVSA Nominated Tester (desirable)
• Licence– DVLA Licence with Category B, DVLA licence with C1 & D1 / C or C+E driving categories (desirable)
