Position Summary: The role involves ensuring the Metropolitan Police uses the correct investigative powers to place individuals under surveillance and other authorities, following the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, and the Police Act 1997, and providing support to operational units.
Key Responsibilities:
- Quality assurance of covert authority applications to comply with legislation.
- Updating and monitoring the Metropolitan Police Covert Authorities record system.
- Reviewing applications for renewal, cancellation, and modification within designated timescales.
- Providing advice and support to operational officers and senior commanders on covert authorities.
- Monitoring applications to identify priority and urgent cases.
- Presenting applications on behalf of applicants to commanders as required.
- Co‑ordinating with other law enforcement agencies and departments.
- Supporting training of operational staff at all levels.
- Mentoring new MO5 staff members.
- Other duties as directed.
- Ensuring competency in IT tools and systems.
- Communicating effectively across teams and stakeholders.
- Identifying, analysing, and mitigating risk while maintaining governance standards.
- Adapting quickly to new roles with attention to detail.
- Managing and prioritising workloads under time pressure.
- Willingness to undergo Management Vetting and Security Clearance.

Vetting: This post requires National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) before taking up the post.
Location: Westminster. Hybrid working (subject to change) will commence once fully trained; the role is full time, requiring office coverage until 1800 hours.
Salary: The starting salary is £40,519, which includes allowances totalling £3,009. The salary is broken down as £37,510 basic salary, which will increase annually until reaching £40,141, plus a location allowance of £2,009 and a non‑pensionable allowance of £1,000.
