Civilian Investigator – Major Incident Room - 01

This role is part of the Major Inquiries – Cold Case Homicide Team within Specialist Crime of the Metropolitan Police. You will manage and record evidential and non‑evidential material in major investigations using the HOLMES platform, ensuring accuracy and compliance, and support the reinvestigation of unsolved homicides and major crime cases. You will exercise delegated investigative powers under PACE, gather, preserve, and present evidence, and support Cold Case Homicide detectives through trial preparation and court proceedings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Read, receive, and manage investigation material in HOLMES to maintain accurate case records.
• Review and categorize sensitive evidence per disclosure strategies set by senior officers.
• Conduct investigations into unsolved and current homicide cases in compliance with legislation and policy.
• Liaise with the Crown Prosecution Service to provide case documents and disclosure material.
• Prepare case files, redact documents, and maintain accurate records to support prosecutions.
• Provide information to victims, witnesses, and defendants as needed for case progression and safeguarding.
• Attend meetings with CPS, colleagues, and partner agencies to share information and resolve investigative issues.
• Attend court hearings, giving evidence and supporting case presentation.
• Work collaboratively within the Cold Case Homicide Team and external agencies, following direction from the supervising Detective Sergeant and SIO.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Knowledge of criminal law and investigative procedures, including PACE, Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act, Children’s Act, Human Rights Act.
• Understanding of data protection legislation and information management in criminal investigations.
• Proficient in HOLMES (versions 17‑19) as a reader/receiver.
• Ability to interpret, summarise, and present complex information clearly.
• Experience handling sensitive and distressing material with professionalism.
• Effective communication with victims, witnesses, and stakeholders via phone, email, and face‑to‑face.
• Competent user of Microsoft Office and police systems such as CONNECT and IIP.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to identify errors and omissions in investigative submissions.
• Strong written and verbal English skills, providing clear and precise direction.
• Experience working in a Major Incident Room or similar investigation support environment.
• PIP2 accreditation with recent (within last 5 years) experience of conducting complex investigations.
• Experience gathering, analysing, and evaluating intelligence from multiple sources.
• Experience working on serious and complex investigations.
• Ability to identify reasonable lines of enquiry to support Cold Case Homicide Team cases.

Essential for the Role:

• Accredited Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP) Level 2 is mandatory.
• Willingness to complete further HOLMES and other relevant system training as required.

Desirable for the Role:

• Completion of at least one HOLMES training course (Reader or Receiver).
