The Criminal Finance Teams form part of the Metropolitan Police Service Economic Crime Command. Economic Crime encompasses a diverse range of capabilities focused on tackling serious and organised criminality, with a clear objective of preventing offenders from profiting from crime. The Criminal Finance Teams provide specialist financial investigation function, supporting both frontline and specialist OCUs to identify opportunities for asset recovery and develop actionable financial intelligence. This role plays a key part in enhancing asset recovery under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA), utilising powers including cash seizure, account freezing and confiscation. It also promotes the effective use of POCA as a critical tool for disruption and prevention. The successful candidate will have a tangible impact on removing the financial incentives of criminality, supporting the disruption of Serious Organised Crime and high-harm offending and helping to protect the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and pursue opportunities to recover criminal assets using relevant POCA powers.
  • Conduct Confiscation and Restraint investigations, including the preparation of Section 16 and 41 statements.
  • Attend Magistrates’ and Crown Courts to obtain POCA orders and present evidence in support of financial investigations and confiscation proceedings.
  • Manage a caseload effectively, ensuring compliance with court and statutory deadlines.
  • Assess referrals from frontline and specialist teams, determining the most appropriate asset recovery approach to progress investigations.
  • Review, analyse and develop financial intelligence to inform decision-making and support effective investigation and asset recovery outcomes.
  • Prepare case files, ensuring all evidential and disclosure requirements are met.
  • Maintain accurate, auditable records that demonstrate clear decision-making and adherence to legislative and organisational requirements.
  • Take a lead role in the financial aspect of operations, working closely with investigating officers, attending briefings and contributing to investigative strategy.
  • Provide specialist financial investigation support and advice across the organisation.
  • Maintain professional accreditation as a POCA Confiscator and undertake continuous professional development in line with national requirements.
  • Support the development of colleagues by tutoring and mentoring Accredited Financial Investigators (AFIs) through their training and accreditation.

Who we're looking for

  • In-depth knowledge of POCA legislation and the wider criminal justice system.
  • Proven experience of conducting POCA investigations.
  • Highly developed analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and reach evidence-based conclusions.
  • Produces clear, concise, and accurate written work suitable for evidential and court purposes.
  • Effectively manages and prioritises a caseload independently, ensuring compliance with statutory deadlines.
  • Proficient in the use of financial investigation and analytical tools (e.g. Altia, Spidersense, and Microsoft Excel).
  • Experienced in court processes, including providing evidence where required.
  • Sound understanding of CPIA disclosure requirements and evidential standards.
  • Strong IT skills, including effective use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrates sound judgement and decision‑making when handling large volumes of complex information.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders within a law enforcement or regulatory environment.
  • Holds PIP2 investigator accreditation.
  • Makes continuous professional development in line with accreditation requirements.
  • Accreditation in Part 5 CRISP powers is desirable.

  • Accredited Confiscator (mandatory, issued by the Proceeds of Crime Centre).
  • Ongoing compliance with CPD requirements to maintain accreditation.
