This role is part of the Economic Crime Unit within Specialist Crime of the Metropolitan Police. Accredited financial confiscators conduct investigations under POCA, using statutory powers to seize, freeze and recover criminal assets. The role manages cases from referral to court presentation and contributes to the delivery of income through the Asset Recovery Incentivisation Scheme.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Identify and pursue assets linked to criminal activity, receiving referrals from operational teams and applying statutory powers.
- Conduct financial investigations, gathering and analysing data from banks, HMRC and other sources, and preparing accurate financial reports for proceedings.
- Secure and manage evidence, maintaining comprehensive records and preparing legally compliant statements to support civil and criminal proceedings.
- Exercise accredited confiscator powers in compliance with POCA, disrupting and recovering criminal assets.
- Present evidence in court, making applications at magistrates’ and crown courts and providing evidence under oath.
- Collaborate with partners including CPS, HMRC, financial institutions and legal representatives to progress investigations and secure evidence.
- Maintain professional accreditation through the Proceeds of Crime Centre (NCA) by evidencing CPD and PDP requirements.
- Manage personal caseload, prioritise investigations, meet statutory deadlines and exercise autonomy in decision‑making.
Requirements
- Accredited Confiscator (PoCC/NCA) with ongoing CPD and accreditation maintenance.
- Delegated powers under the Police Reform Act.
- Sound knowledge of criminal law, POCA legislation and the criminal justice system.
- Understanding of disclosure requirements, warrant application processes and investigative standards (PIP2).
- Skill in gathering, evaluating and interpreting financial intelligence to produce evidence‑based conclusions.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise written reports and present complex information to courts and stakeholders.
- Confidence in engaging with suspects, witnesses and external stakeholders in challenging circumstances.
- Competent user of Microsoft Word, Excel and investigative systems (e.g., CRIS, COPA, Altia, Spidersense) or willingness to learn.
- Capability to manage workload autonomously, prioritise cases and meet strict statutory deadlines.
- Experience conducting criminal investigations to PIP2 standard, preparing and conducting interviews, applying for and executing warrants, presenting evidence in court and handling sensitive material.
