Salary: The starting salary is £63,409, which includes allowances totalling £3,009. The salary is broken down as £60,400 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £65,886. Plus, a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Job Summary: As a Senior Software Developer, you will play a pivotal role in developing existing systems and shaping the future of Counter Terrorism Police systems. To lead on designing and creating bespoke software following agile delivery processes as part of a DevSecOps team. This role requires a flexible working approach and be self-motivated to help ensure that the various environments are well architected and documented. This role is aligned to the Senior Developer role set out within the (DDAT). You'll join a new team of Software engineers, working flexibly from home and with an office space in our air-conditioned operations centre located east of Birmingham, with easy access from the M6 and M42. A London office location is also available. This is a great opportunity to assist in building a world class development function. Key Tasks:

  • Be responsible for writing clean, secure code following a test-driven approach
  • Create code that is open by default and easy for others to reuse
  • To build future proof reusable code libraries, which can be shared, in-order to drive further efficiencies throughout the team.
  • Work with other disciplines to understand what needs to be built - including product managers, designers, and QA engineers, to understand project requirements, provide technical insights, and ensure successful project delivery
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, identifying areas for process optimization, automation, and productivity enhancement
  • Have an understanding of the whole system and take responsibility for teaching this to others
  • Understanding and experience of security checks and gates within a CI/CD process
  • Lead and mentor other software developers, providing guidance, support, and technical leadership throughout the software development lifecycle
  • Agile mind set and ability to thrive in collaborative teams.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent git and issue tracking skills
  • Commitment to code quality and best practices, including writing automated tests and conducting code reviews.

This role does not attract Shift Disturbance Allowance. If you are currently in a shift-working role, SDA should cease upon appointment to this job.

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. This post requires British nationality (some dual nationals may be ineligible) and a Developed Vetting (DV) clearance. Essential For The Role:

Essentials Experience:

  • Experience of software application development and coding skills, preferably in an Agile DevSecOps environment.
  • Competence in at least one modern programming language - we use .net / Angular / Typescript but we don't require you to be proficient in our stack
  • A working knowledge of containers - Docker / Kubernetes / Helm etc
  • Database skills in a modern RDBMS such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL etc
  • Communicates effectively, using plain language and simplifying technical information appropriately to the audience. Excellent written communication skills with particular emphasis on strong scientific report-writing skills and documenting code.

Desirables:

  • Experience and knowledge of the Government Security Classifications levels and an understanding of the Cabinet Office Security Policy Framework
  • Knowledge of one or more of the below:
  • Experience of Unit Testing and automated testing tools as part of a continuous integration pipeline
  • A keen desire to cross-train into DevSecOps infrastructure skills
