The Training Manager will lead our end-to-end driver training strategy, shaping new entrants and licence holders into confident, safe and customer focused professionals who meet Metroline Manchester standards. They will own the training strategy and budget, ensure full DVSA compliance, and move theory testing into pre recruitment to strengthen readiness. The role drives high performance through strong leadership of Driver Instructors, mentors and coordinators, with clear expectations, consistent standards and a relentless focus on safety, pass rates, time to competence, retention and audit outcomes. The Training Manager will also modernise how we train by introducing innovative approaches such as remote learning where permitted, simulators and modular delivery, ensuring a high quality, efficient and engaging learning experience for all colleagues.
Key success measures (12–18 months)
- Embed a structured post test programme (e.g., STAR centre) combining CPC modules (e.g., Bee Network/Dementia Awareness) with active driving practice led by DIs and mentors.
- Safety: Reduction in preventable incidents/early “bumps” per 100k km; improved post incident recovery performance (with SHEQ and Service Delivery team collaboration pre remedial).
- Quality & speed: Improved first time pass rates; reduced time to independent driving.
- Higher new starter retention at 3/6/12 months; improved trainee and manager satisfaction.
- Compliance: Zero material findings at DVSA/JAUPT monitoring; on time course and centre approvals/renewals; accurate trainer and attendance records.
- Efficiency: Optimised trainer utilisation; effective mix of in person/remote delivery where permitted.
- Maintain approved training centre status; manage annual course approvals/renewals and readiness for DVSA/DVA monitoring and quality assurance.
- Ensure course structure and durations comply with current Driver CPC rules (minimum hours, modular delivery where applicable, remote options where allowed).
- Build a high performing team of DIs, mentors, and coordinators; set standards, coach, and create a culture of accountability and care.
- Clarify and embed the “our way” of safe, professional, customer focused driving, consistent across all depots.
- Work closely with Service Delivery, Engineering, Talent, HR, and Safety to forecast demand, plan cohorts, and ensure smooth handovers from training into depots.
- Run a tight performance rhythm: dashboards, review cadences, and action plans on pass rates, incidents, time to competence, retention, and trainer utilisation.
Benefits
- Free Bus Travel for yourself + 3 (companion + 2 children OR 3 children)
- Pension Scheme Contributions
- Benefits Hub
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work Scheme
Essential Criteria
- Understanding of passenger transport operations standards (aligned with Transport Manager CPC expectation for knowledge of regs and operator licence compliance)
- Previous experience as Senior training leadership in Transport (ideally passenger) with end to end responsibility for strategy, delivery, quality assurance, and outcomes.
- Proven track record running Driver CPC training programmes and managing approved centre obligations (applications, renewals, monitoring).
- Confidence working with depot operations and unions; able to balance pace with engagement.
- Strong grasp of Driver CPC frameworks, course content expectations (road safety, HS&W, environmental impact), and permitted delivery models (classroom, practical, remote, modular).
- Credible, calm, decisive leader who sets the bar high and brings people with you. Data led and improvement minded; comfortable challenging constructively at SLT and depot level.
