The Garage Manager is responsible for the overall performance of the garage, including quality, financial, contractual and legal standards. Ensures that the performance of the garage meets and preferably exceeds the standards laid down by the Company and TfL. Manages and controls the activities of the garage to ensure the delivery of performance against targets and to minimise any adverse effects of underperformance.

Ensures the timely and efficient running of the engineering function at the garage to make sure that the required number of buses are available at all times and that buses are maintained to Company, TfL and Ministry standards. Liaises with Senior Management and specialist staff as required. Co-ordinates the activities of the Operating, Engineering and Administration functions within the garage to optimise the overall effect on performance.

Through counselling and coaching and use of the Company Performance Management system, ensures that all direct reports are trained and developed to realise their potential. Similarly, ensures via direct reports that all relevant staff at the garage receive appropriate development. Promotes and maintains a harmonious working relationship between union, staff and management. Also ensures that the disciplinary policy is correctly applied and where necessary hears disciplinary appeals and grievances in line with Company policy.

Deploying resources within the garage to achieve maximum level of performance that is efficient, cost effective and sustainable. The list above is not exhaustive.

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrable operational management experience within a transport company;
  • Managing Safely qualification (or equivalent);
  • Certificate of Professional Competence;
  • PC literate;
  • CMI Level 5 (or willing to work towards).

  • Excellent presentation skills;
  • Ability to prepare and present statistical data;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and using own initiative;
  • Ability to develop and maintain good relations with stakeholders, both internally and externally;
  • Ability to manage own and others workload and prioritise tasks effectively;
  • A sound working knowledge of bus service operation;
  • An understanding of the company’s obligations to TfL;
  • Experience of leading a team, including setting KPIs and performance management;
  • Understanding of employment law and how it is applied in the workplace;
  • Extensive experience of dealing and consulting with a union;
  • Ability to encourage, coach and guide Drivers and garage based staff to achieve the standards and levels of performance expected by Metroline.

Hours of work: 38 hours per week, Monday to Friday
