Manage the day to day engineering resources within the garage under their control to ensure the provision of sufficient vehicles at the required standard of serviceability, reliability and presentation to meet operational requirements in full. To achieve this in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner measured by the achievement of all applicable engineering KPIs.
Responsibilities
- Responsible to the Engineering Manager (EM) for ensuring that sufficient serviceable vehicles are available at all times to meet operational requirements.
- Organise, allocate, control and monitor engineering and logistics activity at his/her garage(s) making use of company management systems such as FMS where appropriate.
- Exercise close financial control and ensure garage engineering outputs are achieved within Budget.
- Initial investigation of technical problems at local level, involving the Metroline Technical Dept and external Suppliers as appropriate.
- Initiating warranty recovery action and notifying the Metroline Warranty Manager whenever an item under warranty is changed at a Garage within his or her area of responsibility.
- In liaison with the EM and Garage Manager, investigate and monitor vehicle accidents and related issues to minimise accident related costs.
- Organising and monitoring the cleaning and maintenance of garage premises, plant, tools and equipment to ensure these are kept at an appropriate standard.
- Dealing with all aspects of staff discipline and has the authority to dismiss employees within the agreed disciplinary and attendance at work procedures.
- Deal with all day-to-day matters involving local trades union representatives, to ensure the smooth operation of the engineering facility.
- Promote staff’s awareness/application of all mandatory Health & Safety procedures and legislation through training, mentoring and discipline.
- Cover for the EM as and when required and act as on-call Engineering Manager at weekends.
Essential Criteria
- NVQ3 or equivalent in relevant trade discipline;
- NVQ2 in management or ability to work towards it;
- Understanding of O Licence requirements, working towards International CPC qualification;
- Experience of mandatory, legal paperwork associated with bus operations in the London environment.

- Excellent written and spoken English with the ability to communicate clearly and at all levels;
- Must be able to demonstrate credibility to build professional relationships with both employees and managers;
- Discreet when managing confidential matters;
- Able to build lasting relationships with internal and external stakeholders/suppliers;
- An understanding/appreciation of the service requirements and the management of day to day operational issues;
- Ability to influence and persuade key decision makers;
