Birmingham

At Metro, we don’t just move freight - we move boundaries. Powered by cutting-edge technology and driven by passionate people, we deliver world-class import/export solutions across air, ocean, and road freight, as well as supply chain management and specialist services in retail, manufacturing, automotive and chemical sectors amongst others.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking AI Engineer to join our team based at our Birmingham Business Park HQ. The AI Engineer will play a pivotal role in accelerating AI adoption across Metro’s business. Working closely with teams across the organisation, you will design, build, and operate the technical foundations that enable AI across our products and internal operations. This is a hands‑on role where AI fluency, curiosity, and a strong learning mindset are essential to succeed.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, love solving problems, and want to be part of a company that values innovation and growth - this is your next career move.

What You’ll Be Doing

As part of our Technical Solutions team, your role will include:

  • Drive and support the company’s AI strategy through the identification, design and delivery of high‑impact use cases and implementations.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally to solve complex business challenges, translating requirements into scalable, practical engineering solutions.
  • Re‑engineer end‑to‑end processes into AI‑enabled or AI‑native workflows, defining appropriate levels of automation (human‑driven, assisted, fully automated).
  • Design, build and deploy AI‑driven workflows, agents and automation solutions using modern foundation model technologies and the Microsoft ecosystem.
  • Ensure seamless integration with enterprise systems, maintaining governance standards and avoiding fragmented or “shadow” solutions.
  • Monitor, optimise and manage AI solutions in production, ensuring performance, scalability, traceability and explainability, while continuously improving outcomes.

What You’ll Bring

You’ll need:

  • Proven experience designing and delivering AI solutions and automation workflows, including rapid proof‑of‑concept development to test and scale high‑value ideas.
  • Strong technical expertise across the Microsoft AI ecosystem (Azure AI, Microsoft Foundry, Power Platform AI, M365 Copilot), with solid API and integration capability.
  • Experience in process analysis and re‑engineering, applying human‑in‑the‑loop and automated models to create efficient, scalable solutions.
  • Strong systems thinking and business understanding, with the ability to connect technical solutions to real operational and commercial outcomes.
  • Highly organised and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure and deliver end‑to‑end ownership of complex initiatives.

Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills, with the confidence to make and own technical decisions, while collaborating effectively and clearly explaining rationale.
