We are seeking an experienced, capable, and thoughtful Garden Maintenance Manager to oversee the care, development, and ongoing success of our maintenance program this season. This role is ideal for someone with 3+ years of experience in garden maintenance, horticulture, or landscape management, and who is equally comfortable with hands-on garden work, independent decision-making, and client communication. This is a highly autonomous role requiring strong plant knowledge, good judgment, and a proactive, resourceful, solutions-oriented attitude. It is best suited to someone who takes ownership, has a strong eye for detail, and cares deeply about well-run, beautiful garden spaces.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Lead our seasonal garden maintenance program with a roster of 50+ clients.
- Act as lead gardener and work closely with other team members to deliver excellent client service and exceptional garden care.
- Quickly and independently assess garden spaces to identify what is and isn’t working.
- Develop and execute maintenance plans to advance the health and productivity of garden spaces.
- Build and maintain client relationships through both written and in-person communications.
- Specify, source, procure, and maintain plants and materials to support garden maintenance operations.
- Manage scheduling (and re-scheduling!) of maintenance appointments, nursery and supply runs, etc.
- Assist in estimating, proposing, and billing processes as needed (project management software training provided).
Qualifications/Requirements
- Three+ years garden experience.
- Working knowledge of planting, transplanting, pruning, soil health, fertilization, and basic pest control.
- Able to identify common perennials, shrubs, and trees.
- Able to maintain and evolve the look and “vibe” of garden spaces.
- Able to specify and source plants for replacements and ongoing development.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Able to lift 50 lbs.
- Comfortable using and maintaining basic tools.
- Adaptable, resourceful, and able to problem-solve on the fly.
- Willing to work outdoors in variable weather.
- Confident communicating with clients, vendors, and partners.
- Organized, punctual, trustworthy, and professional.
- Able to manage estimates, plant sourcing, scheduling, and invoicing.
- Comfortable using Excel, Google, and JobTread (training provided).
