This role is for a highly skilled candidate to lead Metro's industry-leading sport social video team focused on reactive news, original journalism and repeatable formats. This role will be key to maintaining high quality video content in the Metro tone of voice across social platforms, specifically focusing on sport, and ensuring integration with the sport editorial desk where appropriate.
This role will balance commissioning with content creation, as it’s essential to lead the way in demonstrating what gold-star sport content looks like across platforms. A strong editorial instinct for sport, expert knowledge of social platforms and algorithms, and exceptional technical abilities are crucial.
Role Responsibilities- Oversee daily output of social video sport content, managing more junior members of the team
- Set direction of tone of voice, sport story coverage, and general direction of sport-related social video output in conjunction with the Head of Social Video
- Monitor sport news, trends, and online conversation, bringing original sport-focused pitches to senior editors
- Ideate, script, present, edit, and deliver daily and weekly short form video content covering key sport events and narratives across social channels
- Film high-quality, original content remotely and in-person, including with sport contributors and talent
- Evolve output and develop new formats as required for sport coverage
- Keep commercial objectives in mind during commissioning and development of new sport content. Be willing to appear in content
- Use data and analytics to inform decisions on commissioning of sport content and best practice guidance. Be ready to share this with junior members of the team as well as senior stakeholders
- Understand legal covenants such as the UK Editors' Code of Practice, media law, copyright law, and editorial guidelines in the UK and globally
- Be prepared to travel nationally and internationally to cover sporting events
- 3-5 years experience of working within a sport news/media environment
- A strong sport news sense, with a creative approach to storytelling
- An understanding of the vertical video environment and where it is heading for sport content
- Experience in scripting, producing, editing, and delivering vertical video content, with a focus on sport
- Filming experience essential
- Demonstrable experience of using data and analytics to inform output decisions
- Ability to edit at speed using Adobe Premiere Pro and other editing suites
- Understanding of the UK Editors' Code of Practice, media and copyright law
- Willingness to work in a dynamic, fast-paced sport news environment with flexibility to work unsociable hours as and when required (e.g. covering evening and weekend sport fixtures)
