Responsibilities
- Research and report original news stories across a range of topics that fit within the Metro brand.
- Understand all of the major social platforms and how video should be re-packaged and optimised across platforms.
- Have an excellent understanding of Metro’s TikTok channels and wider social video presence, including story selection and packaging.
- Conduct interviews, gather information, verify facts, and develop news content that is accurate, fair, and engaging.
- Produce content in a variety of formats including text, video, photos, and audio for web, mobile, and social platforms.
- Work with journalists on the social video desk and newsdesk to ideate, film, edit and produce social packages.
- Capture and edit high-quality video and audio content using industry-standard equipment and software.
- Be prepared to film high-quality, original content remotely and in-person, including with contributors and talent.
- Write clear, compelling copy under tight deadlines, often in breaking news situations.
- Use social media and live tools to engage audiences and distribute content in real-time.
- Use data and analytics to regularly inform decisions on pitches and future content.
- Ensure all content meets legal, ethical, and editorial standards.
- Stay updated on current events, trends, and innovations in digital journalism.
- Ability to create engaging newsletters on a variety of topics.
Required Qualifications
- BJTC/NCTJ qualification, Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- 2+ years of reporting experience, preferably in a multimedia or digital-first newsroom.
- Strong reporting, writing, and interviewing skills with a proven ability to break stories.
- Proficiency in shooting video, editing and packaging a story using mobile editing tools such as Mojo.
- Solid understanding of digital publishing tools, SEO, and content management systems (e.g. WordPress).
- Familiarity with social media platforms (X/Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook) and how to leverage them for storytelling and audience engagement.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as news dictates.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with live reporting or field coverage.
- Knowledge of data journalism or visual storytelling tools (e.g. infographics, mapping tools).
- Multilingual abilities are a plus.
- Familiarity with newsroom analytics and audience engagement metrics.
