What you'll actually be doing

A day on the First-Person and Opinion desk involves commissioning articles, brainstorming for exciting and agenda-setting ideas, reacting to big new stories, working with new and regular writers on both timely and evergreen commissions, editing, fact-checking and making legal calls. We also conduct interviews, ghost-write, and plan for series and upcoming projects.

In the role, you'll be expected to pitch and deliver original ideas, while working collaboratively with other desks across the newsroom as we cover News, Politics, Entertainment, TV, Soaps, Lifestyle and Sport. Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a larger team is crucial.

At our section's heart is the aim to offer a platform to underheard and unrepresented voices and issues in the media, and we continue to prioritise this while reacting to the biggest news stories to the day and subjects that matter most to the Metro audience.

This job would be suited to someone who has worked in a newsroom before, or experienced the commissioning and editing process (whether as a commissioning editor or writer). A good understanding of media law and the Editor's Code of Conduct is essential, as is any multimedia experience. The above is not exhaustive and is constantly evolving, based on the needs of the business.
