Responsibilities

As an IT Operations – Azure Lead, you will oversee the delivery and performance of services managed by an outsourced team of Third Line Engineers, supporting both Metro Bank and Consumer Finance Microsoft Azure cloud environments, as well as on‑premises Microsoft services. You will act as the subject‑matter expert for Microsoft Azure, providing technical guidance, oversight, and support to ensure the outsourced team meets operational standards and service expectations. In addition, you will play a key role in defining and driving the strategy for Microsoft Azure technologies, ensuring alignment with business objectives and continuous improvement of cloud services.

  • Oversee the outsourced team’s delivery, ensuring alignment with the Bank’s Azure strategy and operational standards.
  • Drive improvements that enhance both colleague and customer experience.
  • Encourage cost efficiency through process optimisation and automation.
  • Collaborate with Business Analysts and release teams to integrate new technologies while maintaining live service stability.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet agreed SLAs and quality standards.
  • Develop and embed Cloud Service Operations processes, acting as the SME for cloud operational issues.
  • Perform quality assurance on outsourced work, providing feedback and driving continuous improvement.
  • Act as an escalation point, offering technical guidance and resolving blockers across the Bank.
  • Build strong relationships with business and IT stakeholders to align technology priorities with organisational needs.
  • Partner with Engineering teams to define and deliver the Azure platform roadmap.

Qualifications

  • Strong expertise in troubleshooting Microsoft Azure platforms and Microsoft‑based applications.
  • Proven leadership experience managing and overseeing outsourced suppliers.
  • Hands‑on experience in cloud patching, system management, and operational support.
  • Solid understanding of risk management and control mitigation within a cloud environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft technologies, including Azure, Active Directory, Office 365, DNS, SCCM, and PowerShell.
  • Strong experience in configuration, automation, and troubleshooting within cloud environments.
  • Experience operating Azure within enterprise, ideally regulated or financial services environments.
  • Good understanding of Windows OS architecture and administration.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP).
  • Scripting and automation experience (PowerShell, Terraform, Ansible).
  • Strong knowledge of Azure services such as Storage Accounts, App Services, NSGs, and Routing.
  • Broad understanding of cloud best practices, operating models (IaaS, PaaS), and emerging technologies.
  • Experience leading third‑line or operational engineering teams and overseeing technology functions.
  • Proven track record of delivering technical change and contributing to enterprise‑wide standards and roadmaps.
