Location: Reading (on-site preferred Tues-Thurs 2.5 days/week)
Duration: 6 months
Overview: This role supports and stabilises a secure on-premise compute and storage environment. The focus is on server storage access control and operational infrastructure, not network design or build.
You will be responsible for:
- Commissioning new hardware
- Completing migrations to replacement kit
- Managing obsolescence
- Keeping the environment documented, patched, and reliable
Key Responsibilities:
- Complete commissioning of a new storage facility and compute farm
- Finalise migration of workloads to new hardware
- Manage hardware obsolescence and lifecycle issues
- Maintain clear documentation of system configurations
- Diagnose and resolve infrastructure failures
- Day-to-day administration of users' access and systems within a secure project environment
Core Technical Skills Required:
- Windows Active Directory administration
- Windows Server administration
- Linux server administration
- QNAP NAS administration
Operational Responsibilities:
- On-boarding and off-boarding users
- Managing ACLs and user access to files and folders
- Administration of Jenkins, Jira, and project-specific tooling
- Patching, updating, and licensing operating systems and software (software purchasing handled separately)
- Managing backups to tape and performing restores when required
Networking Scope Clarification:
Networking knowledge is required for operational support only. This role does not include:
- Network design or architecture
- Switch/router configuration or build
- Firewall management or network engineering ownership
The environment is already established; networking is managed elsewhere.
