Meta seeks a highly proactive and experienced litigator to serve as Associate General Counsel, Civil Litigation. In this role, you will lead and manage a broad docket of complex civil disputes, with particular emphasis on privacy law and GDPR subject-matter in the context of collective redress, including class and representative-style actions, as well as multi‑party and cross‑border litigation. You will develop and execute litigation strategy across German courts and international forums, advise internal stakeholders on risk and coordinate closely with cross‑functional partners in Legal, Compliance, Policy, and the business. The successful candidate will have particular expertise in the German legal system but does not have to be based in Germany. We are open to hiring for this role in London, Dublin or Berlin.
Responsibilities
- Owning end‑to‑end litigation strategy and execution for complex civil matters in Germany and across jurisdictions.
- Expertise in privacy and GDPR-related litigation.
- Leading on collective actions, including representative and model proceedings, and coordinating global strategy where cases span multiple jurisdictions.
- Managing outside counsel to ensure efficient, high‑quality work product, align litigation strategy with business objectives, and drive consistent positions in related matters.
- Advising on pre‑litigation dispute resolution processes, handling interim relief and injunction practice, and structure effective settlement strategies where appropriate.
- Advising internal stakeholders on litigation risk and strategy and partnering with Product, Operations, Policy and Communications teams in this context.
- Overseeing matter budgets, reporting, and governance, ensuring timely updates and clear communication to leadership.
- Monitoring legal developments in German and EU civil procedure and litigation regimes, and translate those developments into actionable guidance for the business.
Qualifications
- Meta requires all employed attorneys to have a law degree or equivalent certificate to permit the practice of law and be appropriately licensed and authorized to practice law for the company in their assigned work location.
- Unless prohibited under local law, an attorney must hold a current practicing certificate (including where required from the relevant authority in the jurisdiction of the assigned work location) or the local law equivalent bar registration or license as may be applicable.
- 8+ years of post‑qualification experience.
- Qualified lawyer in the EU.
- Language fluency in German and English.
- Experience with complex civil litigation in Germany, and substantial cross‑jurisdictional experience managing parallel or related proceedings in other EU or international forums.
- Experience with German civil procedure and evidence rules.
- Experience navigating EU‑level collective redress frameworks, with a practical, business‑oriented approach in resolving complex disputes quickly and accurately.
- Experience working with cross‑functional teams in a fast‑paced, technology‑driven environment.
- Experience with content, integrity and competition law, including how it is related to tech companies.
- Advocacy skills and experience.
