Foundation DevOps Engineer - OPV Team

We’re looking for an exceptional OPV Foundation DevOps Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet. The job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work. Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. As an OPV (OpMet Production and Visualisation) Foundation DevOps Engineer, you would support live OpMet (Operational Meteorology) solutions with an emphasis on creating and maintaining usable, accessible and supportable services for our OpMet community. This post covers the support and/or enhancement of both SWIFT (Visual Weather and DPF, our Desktop Production Framework) and our cutting-edge, next generation forecast system, Vortex.

Responsibilities include:

• Help to transform technical requirements into operational DevOps processes
• Build medium-complexity stories and solutions (with guidance)
• Identify and resolve issues that are hindering operational delivery

We operate an on-call roster in Technology to provide 24/7/365 support to respond to operational service requirements. This post may be part of an on-call roster and the postholder would be required to participate in an on-call roster where in operation. Your total reward package will be up to £42,524 annually, which includes:

• An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
• Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) of £2,000 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills.
• Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years with the option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave.

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

• Configuration, Programming and Build: You can apply standards and methods to ensure system compliance. You can work effectively with stakeholders and colleagues. You can use agreed specifications to design, configure, code, test or document low-to-medium complexity software. You have a working knowledge of Linux systems and Cloud technologies (e.g. AWS), while understanding cyber security best practice.
• Development Process Optimisation and System Design: You can identify process optimisation opportunities (with guidance) and contribute to the implementation of proposed solutions. You can use appropriate design standards, methods and tools, and ensure they are applied effectively.
• Systems Integration: You can contribute to the definition of the integration build. You can help to co-ordinate build activities across systems. You understand how to undertake and support integration activities, ensuring that our operational forecast systems are reliable, robust and secure.
• Service Support: You can identify, triage and fix operational faults (working alongside colleagues). You are able to communicate progress to stakeholders/customers in a clear and concise manner.
• Values and Sustainability: You can work effectively within an agile team environment, assisting and supporting colleagues in a constructive manner. You are aware of environmental best practice and proactive in ensuring a sustainable future for both the organisation and our wider social sphere.

The panel may perform a preliminary sift of the lead criteria as indicated above.
