The predicted salary is between 75857 - 75857 £ per year.

Location: Exeter. Full‑time, 37 hours per week (minimum 33 hours or job share possible). Hybrid working arrangement available.

Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific leadership and set the scientific direction and priorities for a team of 6–7 Ocean Climate scientists.
  • Lead the production of Regional Ocean Climate Projections for the UK government.
  • Contribute to the coordination, planning, and delivery of ocean climate science capability with key partners both internal and external to the Met Office.
  • Engage and communicate with government stakeholders and partner organisations.
  • Contribute to broader planning and strategy development of the Ocean, Cryosphere and Climate (OCC) group and the Met Office Hadley Centre.

Essential Criteria

  • Expertise in oceanography, climate science or another physical science, with postdoctoral research experience (PhD + postdoc or equivalent).
  • Strong track record in scientific and/or technical delivery, demonstrating research leadership.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate and develop scientific staff and colleagues.
  • Ability to translate user requirements or scientific problems into high‑quality research outputs.
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills with a wide range of audiences, including the scientific community and government.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with others, balancing multiple near‑term requirements while maintaining progress on longer‑term research and development.

  • Outstanding Civil Service pension (average employer contribution 28.97%).
  • Annual leave: 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days after five years; option to buy or sell up to five days per year.
